As former monitor engineer for CRIME, substitute soundman for The Stone (across the street from The Fab Mab), and occasional lighting operator for ROMEO VOID and OiNGO BOINGO , in SF during during the Heydaze of PUNK music..... I was saddened to hear of the passing of Dirk Dirksen , owner and operator of The Fab Mab nightclub.
I received the following from my buddy, Ted......
Calling All Punks...Calling All Punks
Dirk Dirksen: "The Pope Of Punk" leaves behind a Rich Legacy, But Little Cash.
By Ted Oliphant Former Soundman, Mabuhay Gardens.
The Pope Of Punk Has Passed Away, from Baghdad By The Bay, Gardens Of Mabuhay, To The Dark Clubs Of L.A. Dirk Gave Many Their First Breaks, and Many Second Takes. Always With a smile, Dirk Would Go The Extra Mile.
Dirk Dirksen left behind a Rich Legacy, Golden Memories and he was a Jewel, but when he left us he didn't leave behind much cash. Not enough to pay for his SRO Memorial. Not Enough to pay for his Final Resting Place.
Kathy Peck of H.E.A.R. www.hear.net has taken it upon herself to raise the money to pay for Dirk's Memorial and his Final Resting Place in The San Francisco Columbarium where Dirk will be a neighbor of Chet Helms.
On January 2, 2006 Kathy is going to hold an auction to raise money to pay for Dirk's Memorial and Final Resting Place: www.hearnet.com
