Can you guys tell me how i can heal my liver after its damaged by alcohol? i got a blood test the other week and the result said the liver function is at 4 times normal over the normal range ....i don't kow what to do...

please PM me with the reply if possible, thanks

What does the liver do? Really, I have pretty good idea what the kidneys do, but I forgot what the liver does.
I studied it in high school, but I forgot that part.
Thanks.

the liver is like the refinery of the body, whatever you eat will go through the liver and the liver will distribute it to the body. and it also filters alcohol and toxins...

so....anyone wanna help me?

He doesn't sound like a very helpful Doc.

Quit drinking would probably help it. 🙂 Doesn't it produce bile for the stomach to help digestion, or is that the spleen.

maybe he wants to see if it will go back to normal after the alcohol comsumption stops.

this killed my uncle last year. He REFUSED to stop drinking and he could have survived otherwise. Certainly the first thing you should so is stop cold turkey on all alcohol and never go back even if your liver shows improvement. *If* you are an alcoholic (as he was) seek support for that immediately.

dont think there is anyway to "repair" the liver...u just got to stop it from getting any worse which means if u drink a lot or do drugs, stop.

the liver filters out the blood and also produces bile that is stored inthe gall bladder and released into the small intestines to digest food.

i am not an alcoholic, and i only drank like...2 -3 time in my life, seriously. I'll never drink anything alcoholic ever again 🙁

but how can i repair my liver?

Do you have hepatitis (don't answer here but think about it)? What else did your doctor tell you about the likley cause of your liver problem? There are a number of herbal or nutritional helpers, but liver damage is not easily repaired. Call your doctor again (now) and ask for a clearer explanation. If he/she will or can not, get a new doctor that can.

well then i highly doubt it was alcohol that caused the problem with your liver, or it must be something accompanied with it. I am not a doctor, but am in the medical field, but to me I would think that it is a problem other the drinking. I would go see a specialist because i believe there is a number of things it could be.

good luck.

So how do you come to the conclusion that this is from drinking? If that's not what your doctor says, then you're doing REAL good with the self-diagnosis there, buddy. Pre-med student are we?
[/sarcasm]

Unless you drank to the point where you needed immediate hospitalization each time, your liver couldn't be that damaged from alcohol. Even then, it's kind of unlikely.

i guess i am screwed

🙁

that wasn't funny.... yea, all i can do now is wait for another month and go back for another test. If its not improving, then the doctor will give me an ultrasonic.

No, go see another doctor if this one will not explain things to you. Follow MrDingleDangle's advice and see a specialist. I know you're scared right now, but the only thing that will make you feel better is more information and having some constructive thing to do about it. So don't delay!

The liver IS the metabolic powerhouse of the body. Its the organ that breaks up metabolic byproducts, drugs, alcohol, etc. You said your doc said your liver function is four times over the range....which enzyme was it? AST? ALT? GGT? ALP? Albumin? Is your INR/PTT also off?
The etiologies of liver damage/inflammation are various. If you're having symptoms and are concerned, go see a specialist.

as a physician, i can tell you that it is laughable (and malpractice anywhere in the world) to try and figure out your problem in this forum.
the information you've provided is entirely incomplete to make reach any conclusions.

if you don't understand what is going on, talk to your doctor and tell him/her that you don't understand what is going on, and ask them to explain it to you.
if you don't have confidence in your doctor for whatever reason - tell them you would like to see a liver specialist.

DON'T expect to get any useful advice from this forum beyond that..........

I don't need to be doctor to tell you that driking 2-3 times in your LIFE will NOT cause that kind of liver damage.

EDIT: forgot the 'not'

Nicely put! I was thinking the same thing as I was reading down1

Always ask lots and lots of questions regardless of how dumb you think they are! I always have patients saying they are sorry for asking so many stupid questions but they are so very important! 🙂
