My brother needs another computer and is asking me to build him one. He is committed to Intel (but that's beside the point). He wants a P4 Socket 478 or 775. He is NOT a gamer but a power application worker like me. He wants at least 256MB RAM and at least a 200GB HDD. Any suggestions are welcome. :)

His final decision is a LGA 775 processor and 256-1024MB RAM. Any sized HDD larger than 160. I don't know anything about Intel so I am in need of some help. Thanks.

No offense, but to me it sounds like your brother doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground.

Why would a person insist on an LGA775 motherboard, but then be so flakey about the amount of RAM in the system?

Just remember if he insists on a bad configuration (3.4GHz P4, 256MB RAM) and it runs bad, it won't be that he picked bad components, it will be that you can't build a computer.

Personally, if you're working on a budget of some sort, I'd be looking at S478 + an overclockable P4 Northwood. 1GB RAM (2x512 sticks). Something like this:

Abit IC7-Max3

2x 512MB PC4000 DIMMs

Intel P4 2.4C @ 3.0GHz (250FSB)

Your choice of GeForce 6600GT AGP or Radeon 9800 Pro/XT. If you're really doing no gaming, anything DX8 or better will accelerate windowing effects just fine - FX5200 or better will be fine.

Cheapest HD you can find over the size you want with a 5 year warranty - you can search at Newegg based on warranty. Unless you're looking at a Raptor, SATA vs. PATA doesn't make a difference.

The IC7-Max3 integrates gigabit LAN and 6 channel audio, so that should be all you need. Hope that helps.

EDIT: I know he said he wants LGA775, but unless you're looking at higher-end configurations there's no point. It's not like an LGA775 system will be more upgradable than a S478. As I understand it, the LGA775 is here to stay but the 915/925 Northbridge is not. Plus LGA775 implies PCIe which limits your video card choices to higher-end cards ATM. And PCIe x1 slots are basically worthless ATM and you'll be saddled with at least one of them.

You bet he dosen't. I will probably not give him less than 512MB. He wants LGA 775 because he is stupid. S478 does not perform much worse, but he is the one who will make the calls.

3.4 sounds fine and 512 is probably just the amount he needs. I have no idea what graphics card he wants, but I think i'll buy he a ATI X700.

I like the LGA chips because you can carry them in your pocket for a week and wash them in your trousers and the damn thing will still work!

Cheers!

Man... have you built that opteron I helped you decide? Show him that running intensive apps.

I pity the fool who insists on Intel without stating the reasons, so the ATer's can poke holes in em.

Budget?

yeah, built that Operton(TM). I did make one adjustment though. Upgraded to Dual Operton(TM) 246 instead of 244. Runs my apps like crazy. Thanks ribbon.

He is addicted to intel like it's some sort of drug, so i'll just build an intel system for him. he is no gamer but he is a multitasker.

Hmm... I'd choose intel as well.

Ok I meant when dual core 64 bit Dothans w/ 800mhz FSB come out on a LAPTOP!

I always thought MP was good, but i guess operton is better. I have finally changed his mind an he will to AMD now.

Now then, what processor should I get him?

he will not do work nearly as extensive as mine, but it will be similar.

2800+, 3000+ are out of the picture.

I'll stick with Dual Xeons for now. They just work better for what we do. When Win64 is official, we'll see what's on our plate.

Cheers!

Why? Intel CPUs generally do much better when it comes to Video Editing/Encoding, Content Creation and Multitasking.

via will rip the sheets of your bed while you sleep and send 4volts overage to your rectifiers killing your stability plans and turn your screws backwards so your mips go low and you see the sand timer on the scren for a loong ass time!

I have those. It's an awesome setup for doing work. I'd recommend an Opteron rig instead, unless you can get one really cheaply. The cost benefit just isn't there, and this is a dead upgrade path. No new processors, no PCI-E, no faster memory, no SATA...

Tell him that he needs to get a divorce from his new golddigging CPU-wife. :p
