Long story short, I have had a history of knee injuries dating back to early HS. I am now 24. I had an ACL reconstruction done on my right knee a few years ago. I know I had a bit of meniscus damage as well as cartilage damage at the time. After the rehab I went back to my normal life. I am not uber active, but probably more active than the average person. I play in a soccer league currently and this is where the problem lies.
From time to time after games and what not I'll have a sore knee. It usually goes away within a day or two, but during that period my range of motion in my knee is limited and sometimes causes me to limp a little bit.
Last week I was playing and I stepped on my leg weird which caused me to go down. I came off the field in a bit of pain. I limped around and walked it off for the next 15 minutes before going back into the game. I wasn't 100% but I was able to tough it out for the rest of the game. After the game the adrenaline war off and it was very stiff and hurt quite a bit. This pain lasted a few days longer than normal and was more severe than normal.
Today I was practicing out in the yard and simply kicked the ball. I went down immediately in a lot of pain. It almost felt like when I tore my ACL back a few years ago. Very sharp pain, felt like I couldn't move it. Its been a few hours now and most of the pain is gone. Again, range of motion is limited at the extremes (straight and bent) and when I do visit those extremes I get a sharp pain. I can walk on it for the most part though.
Weird thing is, I always seem to lose range of motion when I injure it and I don't understand why. Obviously I could go back and see my surgeon, but I figured someone here might be able to give me a bit of insight.
UPDATE
Its been a few days since I posted this thread, but I wanted to update my situation and get a few more opinions if I could. Seems like there are some very knowledgeable people here.
I took ibuprofen and went out with my team. It actually felt pretty good while running/jogging on it. I thought maybe it wasn't anything major, but while jogging (not even hard, it was actually when I stopped) I stepped on it lightly and went down hard. Sharp pains just like earlier in the day. That went away after about 15 minutes but that was pretty much it for me. The next day the knee was really sore and range of motion really limited again. I thought that maybe it was just typical soreness and I was going to give it a few days. It didn't get ANY better. In fact, sometimes when walking on it and trying to straighten the knee completely I got the sharp pains and the knee gave out. This is still occurring today. I've already made an appointment with my ortho surgeon, but unfortunately he can't see me until Aug. 25 (which is crazy, IMO). I am not doing anything outside of walking on my leg right now. I have tried a lot of stretching to work it out, but even if it seems to help temporarily, a few hours later its really tight again. It hurts like a bitch when stretching too. I have basically seen no improvement thus far. I walk with my knee bent at about a 25 degree angle. Bending the knee to far in also creates the sharp pains.
At this point I'm getting pretty concerned. I figure the Doc. will look at it and order an MRI. At which point, who knows? Just curious if there is anything else I should be trying/considering at this point. Ice/heat/stretching is in the arsenal. Staying off it aside from necessary movement is also being practiced.
Thoughts?
BTW, Thanks for everyone's help thus far. Even though I know an Ortho will be able to tell me much more, hearing qualified opinions at least puts my my mind to a bit of ease.
