Well, I was a fool and let my wife drive my Mazda6 this weekend. She obviously wasn't paying attention and hit a "big hole" on the side of the road. Mechanic just called and said it looks like the cv joint needs to be replaced and the wheel is bent. Mazda wants $360 for the cv joint and 150 for the wheel, at least the mechanic says that. He said he could get a refurbed joint and wheel for 189 and 99, respectively. Then add about $160 in labor on top of that to come to $450. Does this sound about right? Do I take a chance going with non-Mazda parts in this area?

You sure she didn't hit a divider or curb? Wow that must have been a hell of a hole!

Bull. She hit something a lot bigger than a small hole, I'll guarantee that. Something big enough to not only take out a CV joint but bend the rim would be big enough that <Sexist> even a woman couldn't miss it </Sexist>

Hmm. The Bermuda Pothole. Hit it and no one ever hears from you again....:(

Anyway, the $ sound right (actually, the wheel sounds cheap if it's alloy). If the car's a beater, you could go for the refurb parts. If it's new-ish, then I'd stick with OEM.

FWIW.

A stock steel rim by me only costs $20. They replace alloy rims for only $150, not too shabby.

It's an 04 Mazda6i and has steel wheels. If I go with the OEM I'll also have to wait another 3-4 days as they are special order.

Here's another question: Do I need to worry about the wheel falling off if I want to take this to the dealer which would require driving at about 55mph on a highway? stupid question, I know.

Just called Mazda, they say the parts shouldn't need to be ordered and the cv joint is 275 and the wheel price, while the service tech couldn't give me an answer said 150 sounded too high. His repair rate is $85/hour also. Looks like I will be taking this to Mazda tomorrow.

Hmm. Probably not. I assume it's still driveable since it got home, but how far as we talking about for driving at highway speeds?

In our area, you can get lifetime warrantied axels installed for $150 or less. Since your 6 is new though, you might not be able to find 3rd party parts. :frown:

About 10 miles. The service guy said it shouldn't be a problem the way the car is now, but damn I would hate for the wheel to go flying off at 50mph.

Yeah, CPA, I'd certainly spring for OEM Mazda parts. Unless you get high-quality aftermarket...
