Calling all ATOT Vets! My dog has bloody diarrhea

My dog just basically shat all over the floor 80/20 blood to feces on the floor. He's been sick all day and we have taken him to the vet for blood work. Waiting on the results tomorrow but it's not looking good from our end.

My dog is a 6 year old Yorkie who hasn't gotten into any bad food, eaten anything bad or the trash. All of a sudden this morning he started throwing up orange then yellow bile. Later he started getting diarrhea.

The vet to do the whole check up and then some is looking like $1000-1100 bucks.

I really don't want to spend that much money on him but he is a loving member of our family. Stuck at a crossroads and if you guys know of anything similar share with me your experiences. I'm either going to put him down if he can't hold the water or take him first thing in the morning to the vet.

???? You took the dog to the vet for blood work but he/she didn't exam the dog and wasn't able to determine what was wrong? The vet didn't prescribe any medication(s)?

What consists of $1000-1000? I would think if the dog ate something that was causing a blockage, x-rays would only cost you $100-200.

Put him down after one day? Is the dog eating/drinking fine?

This is what they performed:

Exam - $60
GHP/PCV/electralytes - $183
Heartworm/Lyme Disease test - $69
IV to get him fluids since he wasn't holding down water - $40

I'm new to the area and took him to the closest vet.

The blood tests come tomorrow, and then they have estimated the following:

CBC
CPL Snap Test
Xrays
injection Cerenia
lactated ringer
various injections
urinalysis

all together could range 783 to 1104 they say.

Dog has been eating Pedigree standard for his entire life and no signs of foul play as hes been eating from this bag for over a month

when i talked to them about the prices being a bit steep they responded with me about their no interest payment plan

Did he get all of his shots?

First thing that comes to mind when you hear bloody stool is parvo. I'm sure it could be a bunch of other things but parvo has been popping up a lot lately mainly in puppies though that didn't get their shots yet or soon enough.

Taking the dog back to the vet. Gonna tell them ill spend up to 1200 bucks anything more I'm gonna go to another vet and if it's gonna cost more in gonna out him down

As others have said, if he hasn't been vaccinated, I'd strongly suspect parvo. I work reception at a vets office, and parvo is hitting us hard this year. We've lost several dogs to it. Vaccinations are life savers.

It's also worth mentioning that whenever we get a dog in that we suspect has parvo, we run the test. I'm not sure why your vet did not?

We had a puppy that died from parvo years ago. I was always under the impression that parvo pretty much only affected puppies. Is that not the case?

Where do you live? Is it warm and humid or has it been raining a lot?
If that's the case it could have Giardia.
It's an intestinal infection from protozoa. If it has been real wet where you are at, the dog could have easily picked it up when it licked it paws, which they always do.

Our had this a couple of times and made a ROYAL mess when we weren't home. Shit everywhere and it didn't smell like normal poo. There was blood in it as well. It had a very "sick" smell to it.

@JJ650 I live in northern Virginia. It's been raining a buch. Some tall grass. Noticed he had been licking about 2 inches above his front paws. Maybe allergies?

I agree that the poo has a sick smell to it

Based on what you have said, go to some other vet.


Vets are sort of like dentist offices... Many of them are purely money generators and don't truly care about your pet living or dying. Any 911 visit is $1000 with a ton of tests, and they leave out the MOST important ones like parvo and poison/kidney until after the first $1000.... Then come up with a story about how it's only $500 for the rest of the tests... Ridiculous.

Find yourself a better vet imo.

There are gastro bugs that can pass through a dog in 24-48 hrs. We have had this happen. One went to the emergency vet - expensive, he was fine. The cost was for tests. If it had run its course he would have been fine in a few days.

It's your choice since you "own" the "animal" ... but as a "loving member of the family" ... I would think you could get into it for a little more. It's a Yorkshire Terrier ... you probably paid 1k or more to obtain it.

Ive owned the dog for 5 years and he is like a member of the family. I'm hoping it's a bug. Originally I thought a neighbor poisoned it at our apartment. But there are tons of dogs around here so I didn't think it could happen.

He hasn't eaten anything for 36 hours and is still throwing up I was sick of cleaning poo off the carpet and had to do something about his health.

I wish I knew of the cheaper vets but I'm new here and hit chose the closest one


Vet called me and they are going to perform all the tests because he is still throwing up

If they can't figure out what's wrong I'll probably just put him down

I bet it's Giardia. The vet should prescribe some meds that will take of it rather quickly.

Have they let his stomach rest? Or give him anti-nausea meds? Where I work recommends letting the tummy rest for 24 hours and then introduce easy to digest foods like boiled chicken and rice (or prescription tummy food) before going back to their regular diet.

Also, has he shown indications of pain, such as heavy panting, drawn up legs, etc?
