Calling all ATOT gun nuts: Extraction problems

Took my Ruger to the range today and put 290 rounds through it - had a few Fail to Extracts, mainly on +P rounds (Winchester Supreme Elite PDX1 JHP and Winchester 9mm NATO). Two of the JHPs failed to extract and had 6 of the 9mm NATO, and one lone 9mm WWB. The rest of the rounds cycled with no problems.

Any ideas what's going on and why I get so many FTExtracts?

Edit: It's a Ruger P95.

When's the last time it was cleaned? Done any mods to it? I have a friend who owns a P95 and he had to send it back to get the ejector tweaked before it fed the way it should.

It might just not like +Ps. The NATO 9mm from Winchester has always been good to me in a variety of firearms, so I'm inclined to think you should take advantage of Ruger's awesome warranty coverage and send it back to them.

How were you shooting?

I don't think I'm anticipating the recoil, I'm holding the gun as straight as a I can (my hands do shake a tiny bit). I don't understand your second question.

kage69, I cleaned and lubed it last night then put it away in it's case. I'm thinking it might just not like +P also. Other than the single WWB (115gr FMJ), all of the other FTExtracts were +P rounds.

The gun is also bone stock with no mods at all. I don't have any problems with ejection, I haven't had a single stovepipe in over 500 rounds. It's only these few rounds every time that get stuck in the chamber.

if you're cleaning it properly after each time you've been to the range, then it probably needs to go in for maintenance (I'm guessing this is the first time this has happened)

if you were shooting off, its an easy way to tell if you anticipating.

My method of troubleshooting is always the simplest things first. Why send your gun in if you just need to adjust your technique?

Did you buy it new or used?
I would experiment with another brand or two before making the decision to send it off then. Maybe the gun just doesn't like hot loads, or it could be there is something wrong with the extractor. Whatever you do, don't let anyone convince you to break out a file!

rudeguy, my shooting was a little off today - I was consistently hitting about a half-in under my point of aim. Maybe I WAS anticipating the recoil. But if my grip was the problem, wouldn't I have had more malfunctions in 290 rounds fired?

Kage69, the gun was brand new, manufactured about a week before I bought it.

While I was cleaning it just now, I noticed that there's a slight gap between the extractor and the side of the slide where it rests. I looked up how it comes out, pulled the extractor and bent it just a tiny bit (per the various forums I found searching "P95 Extractor problems"), and now it sits flush against the edge of the slide.

I have about a magazine worth of 9mm NATO so I think I'll hit the range on Wednesday when I get off work and see if that made any difference.

BTW, if it matters, I'm using CLP to clean and Rem Oil to lube.

Very first time I shot it, I put a hundred rounds of WWB 115gr FMJ with zero issues. The second time was about 5 fail to extracts in 74 rounds of Winchester 9mm NATO +P, and zero problems with 100 rounds of Monarch brand 9mm 115gr FMJ (from Academy, the serbian ammo with PPU on the brass).

Interesting, have you tried simply cycling ammo through it (not firing it) to see if you can reproduce this? I've never had rounds do that to me before, course I don't own a Ruger so my experiences don't count in this context. If it's getting stuck in the actual chamber either the rounds themselves could be off, or its not properly grabbing onto the casings.

I thought not stiffening up your arms could do cause ejection problems?

(please note that I am usually wrong, so please default to that if there is any question)

If you are limp wristing it then yes, usually stove pipes or failure to feed issues from my understanding. However the round is still in the chamber so that's another matter entirely.

Yeah, I have cycled the rounds by hand and haven't had a problem. I ejected two magazines (10 rounds of the PDX1 and 15 rounds of NATO) after I bent the extractor a bit, and every round extracted fine. Seemed to come out with a little more force than usual, though, so maybe that fixed it.
