To make this as simple as possible, it's pronounced similarly to (phonetically) You-en, except it should flow as one syllable rather than two discrete syllables. I.e. say both together quickly; it takes some practice because some Chinese sounds simply don't exist in English.
I asked becuase it looked Chinese to me, therefore I asked if he knew if it was cantonese or mandarin.
