I just called to cancel my directv after 1 year of the $31.99 per month package. The csr said he would credit my account $30 if I would stay. I said "no thanks, I am cutting back on the budget. Then he offered the $30 credit plus 6 months of free showtime. I said "no thanks" because I just don't want it anymore. So if you have directv and want some enhancements, well give them a call if you are ready to cancel. ;) I never posted a hot deal before so if this does not qualify please don't flame, just let me know and I will edit it out or ask for a lock.

I did it a month ago and got $50 credit, $10 off monthly bill for 6 months, and free showtime for 6 months. Not bad but showtime sucks.

They really hate it when people drop service. They tried to give me 3 months free service for the same thing I was already getting when I cancelled my account.

(DTV and DISH)

I got a free receiver ($89 at costco) last time.

its called retention = more $$$ from customer.

its cheaper for them to offer that then run ads costing 250k or more.

I called because of the same thing. They offered me $75 to keep me IF i signed up with them and used a credit card as the recurring payment. Of course I couldn't turn this down, so I went home and got myself a private payment number from AMEX that expired last month.

Solved the problem of the recurring credit card and got $75 credited to my account! LOVE IT!

I did this with my old DirecTV service. They actually wiped my bill of $230 if I agreed to 3 additional mos or service. There were no attachments and I told them that if my signal was still bad I was going to cancel anyway( bad signal was the original reason why I wanted to cancel ).

They wiped my bill, I used the service for 1 more month, and cancelled anyway because of the bad signal. They tried to bill me for the past due amount of $230, but I faxed them the letter then sent to me confirming their deal.

On the other side of the coin... When My Dish system stopped working, the Custoner Support person told me it would cost $119 for someone to come out and fix it. I said, so it would be cheaper for me drop your service and get Direct TV with free hardware, free installation AND a years worth of free rentals at Blockbuster for $24.99? The rep then said, "That's some kind of program were you rent the eqiupment and besides it doesn't matter anyway because we just bought Direct TV. You might be able to find a local person to fix your dish for $50". But getting a whole new system would only be $24.99 PLUS a years worths of rentals! I got this line from two different reps. So much for the idea that if these two mergered they wouldn't get the same attitude that cable companies have.

I'll gladly note that this is the only problem I've had with Dish. The rest of their service has been very good.

I cancelled directv with pegasus. Pegasus is the NRTC reseller for directv. Essentially, if you live in the sticks, due to an old law that was supposed to help small rural cable providers, pegasus is where you have to get dtv.

They charge $5 extra a month than dtv as a 'convenience charge'...I believe whats convenient is them getting an extra $5.

I called to cancel, they sent me to a 'customer retention specialist', who offered to take the $5 off and give me a few months free movie channels. I was actually a little steamed that they'd scam me for $5 until I called them on it. No thanks.

Directv used to be a good deal - better than cable. But their charges just kept escalating. Used to be $1 for an extra receiver and $2.95 for local channels, now its $11 a month for both, plus the pegasus $5 surcharge, just what amounts to basic cable to 2 tv's costs $46. I can get the same thing to as many tv's in my house as I want for $31.

If any of you have AOL which I hope none of you do ;) Try cancelling with them saying their service is slow... I got 3 months for free when I did it and they offered me 4.95/month for a few months after that. I still had to cancel cause it was AOL.

I have had Directv for over a year and the cable company called me the other day to offer to reduce my cable modem service from $39.99 a month to $25 if I swtiched back to cable tv.

I would never switch back. Besides, my neighbor also has (had) cable modem service and we now share a wireless connection. :)
