Without thinking. I was telling a story and I said the guy was old like "co-workers' name. I think they took some big offense to this. Oops.

Should I apologize to him on Tuesday or let it go as if nothing happened.

I called my boss old. I asked him if he colored his hair. Another co-worker was shaking his head as the words came out of my mouth. So it could be worse.

Don't worry, in a few years or so you'll have the youngsters calling you an old man. It's all part of the cycle.

most people should laugh at this type of thing.

"Retirement mode" isn't offensive after all. As in "Bob is in retirement mode". Saying it to someones face though, depends on who they are I guess.

He'll die soon and therefore won't have much time to feel the pain you've inflicted so don't sweat it.

I called a co-worker a bitch, I call another one shithead and say "f*** you" to him daily. The former has begun giving me the finger a few times a week, and the latter nocks me openly. Thing is, all of us are very open with each other, and more or less real, non-backstabbing friends. I limit my language and opinions with everyone else.

Who is "they"? Are you referring to the "old" coworker, or to some of your other coworkers? The word "they" refers to multiple people, while "he" or "she" is preferred as a singular pronoun. Please clarify.

To be fair, I'm 30 years younger than almost everyone I work with, so they make age jokes about themselves all the time around me. If someone has trouble admitting that a younger person might see them as old, then that person is an idiot. You shouldn't have to apologize because he's scared of aging. You didn't make him a cowardly moron.

If he acts like an over sensitive little bitch about it, apologize in a way that is insulting......"you know Bob, had I known you were so sensitive about your age I would not have used you as an example in my story, I apologize. When your birthday rolls around we'll be sure just to put one candle on the cake so you don't get upset and no one knows your age."

If he's gonna be made like a little kid, then damn it, give him a real reason.

I am in no way sensitive at all about my age, so when my birthday rolls around, and I'm asked how many candles should go on my cake, I just tell them, "aaaw hell, just set the thing on fire"
