Called Fry's Electronics and they said the 8800GTX was recalled!

What's going on? Is Newegg and ZipZoom selling cards that should have been recalled?

I noticed you can only return the cards for a replacement which makes me suspicious.

I think you should have gotten more information before even starting this thread. /2cents

There was a Resistor (incorrect one) problem before Launch that Nvidia found.

All the old cards were supposed to have been recalled to fix the problem - hopefully they were all sent back and no one is selling them.

That's BS. Why would I be trying to spread FUD? The 8800GTX kicks the crap out of ATI's top cards. I'm ready to buy an 8800GTX right now. I'll dump this ATI card in a heartbeat.

However, I'm concerned about the problems people have been reporting and the recall that didn't seem to affect newegg or zipzoom.

How is it that Fry's had to send all their cards back but newegg and zipzoomfly had lots to sell.

Is there any way I can check to make sure the card I get doesn't have the wrong resistor?

I'm just trying to make sure I don't get screwed after putting down close to $700 for a video card.

So instead of making accusations how about answering my questions.

It's a question. What more do I need to know? If I had the answer I wouldn't be asking the question.

What are all the problems that you've been hearing about? I had to exchange mine, the replacement has been fine, and I haven't heard of anyone else having issues with their GTX. Many are even getting pretty high OC's out of their's.

Well, for one thing... You are taking what someone told you at Fry's at face value. I'm not saying that Fry's employees are liars, but I am saying that generally people who are actually knowledgeable about PC's aren't stuck selling them at a retail chain... You really should attempt to verify the information before you just assume that because some one who works at Fry's told that the 8800GTXes were recalled that: a) it's true, and b) that it would apply to all cards if it was...

Why did you have to exchange yours?

Artifacting at stock speeds...

It seems to be an isolated incident though. I really haven't heard about people having problems with their cards.

This is the answer. Fry's might have gotten some that were in the batch and recalled. THEN, someone working at Fry's may not have followed up with where current stocks on the G80 cards are (a highly likely scenario). You just happened to talk to them. Bet if you call now, you get a different answer. Nitromullet has pointed this out.

Actually Im curious how to tell if the unit has the wrong resistor also, I bought my evg GTX at frys on the 8th and the unit is so early it doesnt even have a EVGA sticker on the heatsink, its as referance as they come. I havent really been able to test the card since the drivers are so tore up I cant fix the overscan on my tv to play games.

I meant from Fry's. I don't see how you got "Newegg and ZipZoom" might be selling cards that should have been recalled if you got your info at Fry's. See the logic?

Mine's from eVGA (which are the cards that had the problem), and I'm getting better results than most with my card on air with the clock speeds (up to 690/2200...mem doesn't go farther with nTune...it will with SysTool, but I'd rather wait for the driver update).

I have not seen any problems reported from the many hardware boards I visit (Toms, here, HardForums, B3D) that is related to a faulty resistor.

Before launch, there was a case where one of the resistors was not set at the apropriate settings, which is typically common in new hardware, and nVidia delt with the issue by simply changing the resitor to the correct level. This all took place before the launch, and in hind-sight, only affected about 3,000 Geforce 8800GTX GPUs.

They all sent them back at the same time, it's just that we heard about it with Fry's because they were selling GPUs before the actual launch. And the process this would have taken would be simple, since it was mostly a cautionary measure.

This is a non-issue that you needn't be concerned with.

We just did, several times. Why not stop trying to beat a dead horse with the conspriacy rhetoric and give up on it already.

Who cares? It's an honest question and there was an issue with a batch of these cards. (although I thought they supposedly grabbed them all back before they started mass distribution).

I think the real issue is a retarded Fry's employee reading a 3 week old memo.

Personally I wouldnt be concerned but for anyone who is go ahead and hold off buying one for a while till you feel confident. Let common sense be your guide.

Wow, I'm suprised in the very idea of Fry's bothering to stock a top end video card thats less than 8 months old(rather than just stocking a bunch of 8+ month old cards and pricing them like their brand new).
