I've gotten confirmation calls before, to verify you actually ordered something, but this was a little different

They were asking me to list streets nearby (not my street, just streets close by) and then what the nearest highway was. It sounded like the rep was messing around with google earth or similar while i was on the line.

is this a new thing or have i just missed out on it?

I think part of the difference is that is that normally the calls are from the credit card company so they trust the phone number on file while this was the merchant itself doing the checking.

They might get a lot of fraud, and most fraudsters are using addresses they don't really know. So pulling it up on google earth and asking them about their location is a quick way to figure out if they are being honest.

Interesting. I wonder if merchants take any kind of hit with fraud. Or maybe CC companies are getting sick of fraud from that merchant and told them they'd cancel their processing contracts if it doesn't fall.

But if it's not from the card company, I'd call the CC first and find out if it's legit.

i didn't tell them anything sensitive, they gave me my street address first, so telling them surrounding roads doesn't really say anything extra

merchant was an e-delivery gift card processor, so yeah, i imagine they have fraud issues

My guess is they are trying to catch an internal thief. If they were being vague, just trying to confirm a purchase and not any personal info, I would put my bets on that.

My guess is a purchase you made was returned, probably for cash.

Chase sends me an email. I like that.

My corporate card gets shut down a lot since I buy things from China, Russia and weird places. Its annoying but I get it.

I love my Amex alerts but sometimes it's a bit much, I have it text me for all purchases over $10. Yeah I get a lot of text messages from them.

i got called by my bank, never the merchant. they didn't ask address-related questions but they do call me if i buy something unusual.
I got called once because i was using my CC at a internet cafe (i know, i know...)
