Didn't see this posted yet on this forum:

Infinity Ward has announced that the 800-point Xbox 360 Variety Map Pack will be released on June 5th for free to PC players:

NVIDIA is making it possible for PC players to download the map pack for Free on the PC thanks to their sponsorship. In addition, expect to see quite a few promotions popping up leading up to the launch of the map packs on the 5th and beyond. I know NVIDIA has a lot of great things planned for PC users in addition to maps becoming available.

The Variety Map Pack includes four new maps for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare multiplayer including Broadcast, Chinatown, Killhouse, and Creek.

In addition to the map pack hitting, PC Players will be receiving the 1.6 Patch for the PC version of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare that will add support for the new maps, fix a server crash exploit recently reported by the community, and a few additional features / bug fixes.

Thank you nVidia!

Source.

Woot, I gotta start playing CoD4 again! I got a 360 a couple weeks ago and I haven't been playing many PC games. I even considered getting CoD4 for it. But now that they're finally releasing a patch for the PC side, I won't need to spend another $50-$60.

"thanks to their sponsorship" eh? So it would have cost money otherwise? Fuck them. They need promotions for additional content that should be free? FUCK them.

Yep, the 360 payers have to pay for this kind of thing;)

I take it COD4 has an extensive modding community providing player made maps as well?

I actually made the mistake of buying this game for $50, it seems almost identical to COD1 (the only other in the series that i have played) with better graphics and a modern setting with no real innovation.

No kidding. Technically the new maps are "free" for PC players but I would have gladly paid $10 to get them with the 1.6 patch if it meant I could have had access a couple months ago.

Yeah it sure took them long enough. They were deciding how they would release the new maps to PC users. I guess we are past the days where the simple and obvious answer to that is just release the damn maps in a patch or download. Cause the Creek map looked pretty awesome when I seen it released for 360. I understand they were pretty ticked on the amount of piracy, but I think it still sold well enough, and jeez the maps were already made, just release them. And why is the game still full price $50, when games that sold far better like The Orange Box, Crysis, etc have been easily available for less. If they want to charge PC users, they need to have a larger set of content than just a few new maps, like the BF2 booster packs. Maybe PC gaming is heading toward the way consoles charge you for every little extra (DLC), but I wouldn't want to be the first one to do if I were IW.

But still glad we will get these maps. I'm glad Nvidia did something about it! They have a lot to lose if PC gaming dies down.

I guess I'm not as bitter as some of you over this taking a while or being free... does anyone know if we will be able to get it if we bought COD4 through steam?

Thanks for spreading the good news.

Wasn't it Intel who sponsered a map in BF2 and their ads were on the billboards in the map? I expect the same thing with these maps too and have no problem with it.

I usually play modded maps now for the variety and generally only play "hardcore" servers.

I'd say the RPG elements (perks) in a full blown FPS like this is pretty innovative. It allows for a large range of customization without being overpowered.

Can't wait to see the new maps

The bitchers will allways find something to bitch about...

They could be charging us for these maps, like they did the 360 players, like they do for all the BF2/2142 packs. But no, they aren't, and for that I'm thankful.

I've been missing me some COD4 since GTA IV came out, now I need to get back into my fav realistic servers.

Why do you think it should be free?

If it isn't someone will map them out and change the names. Then no one will buy it and Activision looses out.

Why the hell do you think we should have to pay for additional maps? It's not like CoD4 didn't make any money or sell any units, so they are not hurting for money at all, so why the fuck should PC gamers expect to have to pay for additional content? That is just retarded, and if that's OK with you, I dunno WTF you are thinking. Do you see anyone having to pay for content with TF2, or CS, or the other CoD games, or ANY other FPS? (other than the BF series, but those were not plain map packs, they had more content and were expansions)

I will never pay for additional maps for ANY game, EVER.

Why should patches be free? How about the guns? Should you start with a pistol and AK, and then have to pay for all the other ones?

There is, however any unoffical mod made to the game removes the server from the rankings.

Whether it sold well or not doesn't matter. When you bought the game, you paid for everything listed on the game box. Did your box say free additional maps in the future? Otherwise, EA is within their rights to charge for extra content.

Using your own logic and changing the words around, EA could say. Well you bought the game, obviously you aren't hurting for money, you could just pay for additional maps, so why the fuck should they give you additional maps for free?

It's nice that most if not all games come with free content every once in a while, but that's a bonus not a requirement.

Whether you will pay for extra content in the future is your personal choice, I probably wouldn't either. But EA or whoever is within their rights to charge for it if it wasn't promised during game purchase.

EA really need to get their act together. They pissed enough people off with the BF disasters, now this?

Know what will happen if EA starts charging for additional content? Piracy and people not buying the games OR content.

Your logic is fucked, and I hope your ideal of paying ONLY for what is contained in the box doesn't come true for games. EA is especially good at shipping broken games, so if you only pay for what's in the box and expect to pay for patches, fixes, new maps, etc...

You know why they are doing this, right? EA discovered they could con console gamers into paying for new content, and now they are going to attempt to force PC gamers to do the same.

You know what's funny about all this? I'm still in the middle of a (literally) months long fiasco trying to get Northern Strike working on my 2142 account. EA customer support is shit, and their expansions don't freaking work. Expect to have fun with that.

Bottom line: EA wants your money, and will do anything they can to con you out of every last penny. Fuck EA.

/Yet another EA hating post, from someone who used to love them.

I don't disagree with you that it would suck if future games charged for additional content, I'm just saying that the publisher/developer is within their rights to charge for it.

Patches aren't exactly additional content in most cases, it's to fix bugs or streamline things so that the game works as it should, like listed on the box.

I don't think gamers should necessarily love EA for the free content or even be all that grateful, but if all they get is a big FU, then why bother making it free. If you're going to be hated one or or the other, go with the way that gets you more money.

CRAP just realized this has nothing to do with EA. COD series is published by Activision... well my point still holds.

I have only played the multiplayer and aside from upgrades, the occasional computer controlled helicopter and obvious graphical improvements, I do not see much advancement in the franchise.

Haha well he said EA so I went into OMFGEA!!!!! mode. I've just been having a ton of trouble getting EA addon packs to work and I was afraid that this would be similar. I still think it's BS they are thinking of charging for additional content short of expansion packs.

So just subtract my EA rants from what I said before, the rest still stands :p

Patches should be to fix what is broken.

But usually what happens is that a company will add in an extra widget with the patch and call it an upgrade. When you just ask for the patch they say sorry, you need to upgrade. Unless it is a really nasty bug then they might just offer a patch.

Which then makes you get a service contract to pay for all the crap that should work but doesn't, just to make sure everything will work. Then they don't develop that version and move to the next version and the cycle starts again!

Sorry for the rant, software companies just piss me off sometimes. I should start my own and get my own racket going.:D

Affirmative. There are hundreds of maps available for the CoD4.
