Call for a ban of AEG members that advertise/troll Video forum.

Because of the ongoing negative PR directed towards nVidia since the Consumerist published their story about nVidia's shill marketing, many of nVidia/AEG's viral forum marketers have come out of the "closet" and admitted to being AEG agents. In particular, Rollo has been a chief instigator here for years and has gone as far as getting other members unjustly banned for bringing up the possiblity of him working for AEG (prior to his disclosure tonight) and disagreeing with his dishonest/deceptive marketing tactics.

Furthermore, because of AEG agents like Rollo, threads in the video forum have always digressed into needless arguments and flames that subsequently led to several members being banned, thus disrupting any meaningful exchange of ideas. It would only be fair of AT moderators to step up and get rid of all AEG members from the video forum and provide a long overdue service to the rest of the video forum community.

Agents need to go. If anything, it will be a sign that we as a community do not approve of the manipulation of our community for the gain of others, and that we will not tolerate such deception. I think there's actually hope for Rollo now that he is exposed, but in the bigger picture he needs to be banned for the message it will send.

Rollo should be banned, unequiocally, and yes, his ISP should be investigated and all of his alter-ego accounts should be permabanned as well.

I was going to take things a step further and call for several other members to be investigated and/or banned, but I'm going to give it a day or two before I start mentionning names. Let's just say I know of at least 4-5 other members here that I'm 99% sure are AEG, especially in light of everything that transpired today.

I'm PM'ing a mod about this. This is the first time I've PM'ed a mod since I started posting here in 2001.

At the very least apply the rules to advertisers to admitted members of AEG and force them to put an "I am affiliated with AEG and nVidia" in their sig. Also if it ever comes out that ATI uses a similar program and we find forum members to be part of that program same rules should apply.

Rather than a witchunt, I put my support behind requiring posters to disclose any affiliation with hardware companies (beta test, employee, focus group or viral marketing, board of directors member =) in their .sig.

Any who don't comply and are discovered would be banned. That way advertisements should be blatantly obvious to any onlookers, yet helpful information can still be provided.

Coupled with the constant slander and defmation of Ati simply for personal gain, it would be shocking to see AT tolerate such behavior on their forum.

I've only glanced at the thread in question (been busy today), but since it appears Rollo has actually admitted to being one of these marketing agents, I agree that he needs to go or at the very least others should be made very clearly aware of his true intentions (text in his sig, whatever). I think that anyone who even halfway keeps up with the Video forum will be aware of all the trolling and flamewars he's caused or taken active part in (though by no means is he the only one). Indeed, few people who follow the forum regularly will even be surprised much by this admission, but at least it's more out in the open now - as it should be IMO.

I think this kind of thing has a very negative affect on the forums as a community; people should be able to come here without having to worry about whether the advice they just received was from nothing more than a salesman or marketing agent with an obvious bias towards a certain brand - if nothing else, even if you ignore the detriment to the community spirit, he (Rollo and others) is/are basically advertising on the forums without AnandTech's consent and without compensating AT for doing the advertising here.

he is still probably under contract and "paid" to take the abuse for nVidia.
