just heard it on the news. state board unanimously voted to increase the workers' minimum wage by $1, to $6.75/hr. this will be effective on January 1st.

i wonder if this is going to increase the cost of living in California. i noticed that cost of renting apartments in california rises much more steep, compared to other states. two-bedroom apartment i was renting 3 years ago at $1050/month, is now renting at $1450/month.

I agree with Shazam, while in theory a raise in the minimum wage would have inflationary effects, since the low end of the wage scale is already above 6.75 it will not make a whole lot of difference.

Criminy! $1450 for a 2-bedroom?

I'm paying $495 for a 2-bedroom, 2 full bath in Craig, which is about 40 minutes from Steamboat Springs, CO - one of the premier ski resorts in the nation. You'd think it would be higher here than it is, really.

Right now the market for labor is so tight that I don't see it making much of a difference soon..... And when the economy slows down a little and the labor market opens up, the 'market' minimum wage will probably already be higher than $6.75 anyway.

Xerox Man,

Steamboat Springs is beautiful isn't it? Gawd, how I'd love to just drive around there. They've got great roads, and great hot springs!:)

Yup steamboats is beautiful, BTW I think California is taking a step into the right direction with this, since it will help face inflation. This will also help low wage familys in low income areas... comn Oklahoma raise the minimum wage! :)

<<Criminy! $1450 for a 2-bedroom?>>

It's not that bad for most of California...my family only paid $1100 per month for a 4 bedroom home in a pretty decent LA county neighborhood when we were down there. :)

Yakko, I sincerely hope you were being sarcastic.
Try being a kid/teen and having an employer make you do hard work for $5/hr.

That's insane.

What a step in the right direction regarding inflation? To what? Increase it?

Man Viper maybe you should just look for your own place at $400 a month! If i remember you're not even on your parents insurance policy are you? Around here you can get pretty nice 2 bedroom apartments 5 minutes from the college for $400! Might as well enjoy having the place to yourself I say hehe.

time to ask for a raise.
I would love a 5 buck raise.. but I know that I wont get..
Maybe a 2 buck raise.

The funny thing is do the MTA bus drivers get more money now.. their increase was to like 7 bucks an hour.

Phuz,

Yes I am seriuos. The jobs that pay $5/hr are not that hard(i.e. Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, Burger King etc.) I was management in a Taco Bell as well as a Pizza Hut and there were almost no people who deserved more than $5/hr when they started and they got raises based on their work performance. If you expect to be able to work at one of these places and support a family of 4 then you are a dumbass. You want to make more then get a job that pays it. Don't make companies pay for your failings.

Damn Yakko you are seriously ignorant..
I am surprised too, but not everyone knows about Linux and networking and can get a computer job? WOW! That's insane! Not everyone can afford to go to college and have to support their kids off what jobs they can get, you are either a spoiled brat or retarded. I'm sorry that I have to be such a prick, but someone as ignorant as you seriously deserves it.

Impact55,

I am not a spoiled brat and I did not go to college. I have only a high school diploma. I got my first computer job at 28. If you can't learn how to do a job that pays well then tough. With this whole attitude that everyone is worth the same the world is going to crap. If you don't like what you are getting paid go work somewhere else. Don't force companies to pay you more because you are incapable of learning something else. Do not expect to make a fortune off of every job you take because you are not going to. Deal with it. Learn to live within your means and accept the fact that the world is not always easy.

I worked at a grocery store for 5 years and I actually agree with Yakko. 70% or so of the people working there were 16-24 years old high school or college students and we were all lazy and worthless including myself. Very few of the people working there even earned the $5.15+ they paid us including the lifers. If your 35 years old and trying to raise a family making tacos at Taco Bell the problem isn't minimum wage its you. If you can't support your kids off the pay you are capable of getting well tough. Move back in with your parents or other family members. I don't want to have to pay an extra $0.10 for my taco because you're stupid and had 5 kids that you can't support.
