Californians spend freely on Amazon.com before sales tax deadline

I live in alaska that doesn't have a sales tax. Will they charge sales tax if I purchase stuff and ship it to California since I do this a lot during Xmas time? I've done this in previous years and wasn't charged sales tax.

But one time before, I bought a computer through HP and had it shipped to California as a gift, and they did charge me sales tax.

Are you new to America or new to the Internet? Sales tax is based on the destination the package is delivered to.

Shipping destination is what counts w/ respect to sales tax

I wonder how this will affect the other etailers... Newegg, Tiger, Frys.com, etc...

If there is a physical presence in the state; they have to collect the tax.

Amazon fought the definitions of "physical" and lost the battle.

Frys has a presence in CA and a lot of other states.

If a state requires sales tax be collects; the vendor must do it just like the B&M store

I like to not pay taxes on my purchases as it's just going to keep the wasteful government afloat anyway. But I've had to pay sales tax off amazon in my state since day 1 and if I have to, I think everyone else should as well.

Yea, Amazon was the largest e-tailing champion of not collecting sales in states where it did not have a physical presence. But since Amazon 'lost', other etailers (not in CA) are also considering collecting taxes for online goods.

In Texas, each city can add on a certain % to the state sales tax rate so that rates in these cities are different (for example, in some cities around Dallas, the rate is 7.25% and in others, it is 8.25% - IIRC, the actual state sales tax rate is 6%)...

are etailers required to maintain this info so they can charge the correct tax rate (not sure if it would be Zip Code based or something else) or do they just charge the state sales tax rate?

I think that other states/cities do this, but I am not sure...

Yes, CA is like this.

Good point PA has 6% sales tax rate and Allegheny County has local sales tax of 1% on top of the PA sales tax rate that totals 7%. When I bought my wedding rings I bought out of Allegheny County saved me $500.

Here you go look at all the states and sale tax.

#$% I didn't even know this was coming. I have been buying tons of stuff lately due to having just moved. This sucks.

Yeah, stalked the D7000 and bought it last weekend. I've been getting a pile of packages from Amazon left at my door all week. Prime, the lack of sales tax, and my hatred of people outside made Amazon so convenient.

Oil filter, serpentine belt, tension pulley, cereal, books, electronics, lock-tite, cameras, XBOX and PC games, the latest XBOX, all the Christmas and birthday gits, toys, memory cards, toilet repair kit, video card, bike parts, random tools...

It was a good run while it lasted. 🙁

BTW: 8.75% in my zip code

Meh, I'll still buy from AMZ 80% of my stuff. Why spend MY gas when UPS can deliver it to my door?

Sure. I get that. Still have Prime, and still hate people, so I'm sure that I'll still be ordering. Prices just went up 8.75% across the board.

Nothing to be done about it. *shrug*

yep. Me and the gf have been trying to think of ANYWHERE to move that has 95% of the weather CA has w/ a lower cost of living and we got nothing. Might move from LA to SD/SB but that won't do shit for the sales tax/COL

I guess the new Kindle e-readers and tablets will be taxed since the preorders get billed at shipping (i.e. November). :colbert:
