Yeah I read this yesterday and just went "Huh, why have we not thought of this before?"

I like the idea in concept. Devil is in the details on how it actually works out.

That said, Big Pharma lawsuit/FTC crackdown with bad faith admin incoming....

The real legal challenge comes when CA sells it for 1/10th than OR/NV can buy it for and the FTC gets involved.

funny thing..diabetes is the highest in....you guessed it..some of the reddest states in the country. can't wait to see how people bitch that californians get cheap insulin.

Hope they require California citizenship even though it would be amazing for my state of Texas. California already subsidizes red states way too much.

For comparison, Australian prices;

I'm guessing that the 'Private' price is for tourists and the like, that are not covered by the Australian national Medicare system. The 'Discounted PBS price' is everyone with a medicare card ie your standard wage earners. 'Concession PBS price' is your pensioners or perhaps if you are on disability benefits. 'Safety Net Price' - no clue, but I guess your life is difficult so...

I don't know anyone with diabetics, so not sure if how long the 5 vials would last for.

It depends, some will try to stretch their insulin supply but 5 vials normally should last about 2 months. People with diabetes who I talked to spend around $500/month, and that's WITH insurance.

I hope they keep it to California residents, and let's see if someone sues them and the supreme Court rules this is not a states right issue, they are not allowed to manufacture insulin.

Curious how they're going to pull it off. $50M seems impossibly cheap for a manufacturing facility. I hope they can do it.
I'm all for inexpensive insulin, but California has a pretty solid track record of blowing through budgets. HSR and the Bay bridge are the first two that come to mind. We'll do it, but the cost will be many times the estimate, and it will be years before any insulin will ever be produced.

no worries, LA will surely hook it up and not blow those budgets
