It is a good idea 'in theory'. However in practice I think that it will be a clusterfuck.

Think about it - a good, simple ebook reader (think the kindle without all the wireless stuff, with smaller capacity and preloaded for students) combined with an open source textbook model would be cheaper than the current system over the long run. Using the internet and not distributing equipment will create a definite learning gap w/ the less fortunate.

Does anyone think kids in 50 years will be working out of bound textbooks? I don't. Newspapers and magazines will all be going digital too. Books and paper printing are going bye-bye.
Digital text also makes rewriting history much easier, you don't have to burn all those books. So it's got that going for it too.
How do you delete all those "outdated" files?

There's no need to delete them, DRM will make old files quickly unusable.
