California: Govenor orders historic 25 percent mandatory water use reduction

A 25 percent mandatory reduction in water use across the state would save approximately 1.5 million acre-feet of water over the next nine months, which is nearly as much water currently in Lake Oroville.
Brown’s order would require agriculture to report more information on their water use to state regulators and increase the state’s enforcement of people who illegally divert or unreasonably waste water. Brown called on local water agencies to adjust their rate structures to ensure water reductions are rewarded and discourage water waste.
Campuses, golf courses, cemeteries would also be required to make significant cuts in water use.
What? Our leaders are finally getting serious about this drought problem? Or is this an April's fool joke?

How will dry, dead grass affect my golf game? I avg a 72 on a nine hole course...
Time to flush every other time...except for a #2 of course.

until they start restricting my hot water showers, Cali will still be awesome =P

once they mess with my showers though, I'm out.
I hear golden showers are the thing now. Not interested personally but whatever floats your boat.

😛

LOL, you think the environmentalists will let nuclear plants get built in CA? You must have been spending too much time in a dispensary... 😛

I'm wondering where all the "save the coastline" people will go if this drags on for a few more years. We could be looking at a gradual mass exodus if this drought truly lasts for decades.

Well we are going to have to make drastic steps. Unfortunately for all of you we grow a significant amount of your food.

Its kind of ironic that Pat Brown created the infrastructure issue while reaping millions for himself/his cronies and now Jerry is doing the same.

Well this should have a huge impact...

Alright everyone, stop taking showers. You're cutting into the water we need for alfalfa, rice and almonds. You know, stuff the people really need.

People really need food, even you 😉 If we can cut our usage in other ways to allow more agriculture Im willing to do that. Im in the process of buying a townhome and I have a little patch of grass that is mine. I plan on towing it under and putting drought resistant plants in.

This is so true. Just now some people in CA are starting to have a discussion around this about how much water goes to agriculture. It also in terms of dollars, agriculture isn't a huge part of the CA economy.

A lot of golf courses use recycled water now that isn't potable near me.

The Orange County Water District is already in the middle of further expanding the Groundwater Replenishment system and they are exploring desalination.

Personally earlier this year I took out all the grass in my front yard and switched over to more climate correct vegetation. My water use has dropped by over 30%. I am going to flush when I want. 🙂

Yeah, food is all well and good, but pretending that individuals are the problem is ignoring where water is actually being used. Alfalfa cultivation alone uses nearly as much water as every single individual in California combined, and a big chunk of that is being sold to China as a cash crop. We don't want to mess with that because it brings in more money than Joe Sixpack with his well-groomed lawn, but at a certain point, it seems a bit silly to point the finger at individuals who account for so little of the actual water usage.

Not that I disagree with the restrictions, mind you; it's a drought, everyone should recognize that they need to limit consumption. Including alfalfa farmers selling their products to China for livestock feed.

By sucking water out of the entire western US, yes.

I'm not sure what this we and you is, if CA isn't growing food it's affecting you too pal.

There are already ways to make agricultural water usage much more efficient. If your governor put a program in place to help farmers pay for that rather than tell people to only flush after number 2, you could improve your state for generations not just give an illusion for one season.

Not sure what you mean by "significant" but we grow plenty of our own over here in the S.E.

I thought CA agriculture had already been severely impacted by lack of water, no?

The bad news is that no matter where one's food comes from a reduction in the supply from CA will likely mean prices rise for everyone.
