California folks, suggest for me a place to take a year off and do an AmeriCorps program

Basically I'm looking to do some community development, Habitat for Humanity, Community Service, and all that great stuff in another part of the country for a year. Clearly this means relocating to someplace which is in need of these services, which is correlated generally to not so nice areas.
I was looking at a few programs in and around SF including in Oakland, Richmond, Sil-Valley etc... and also in Southern California mostly because I've never spent any time in California or on the Pacific Coast.

Any good reasons to head to one of these areas, or reasons why not too? (Housing is usually provided with these programs, although nothing fancy)

Where are the housing units located? I'm pretty familiar with CA (hell, I LIVE HERE!) :p

From what I've gathered there are programs all across CA (and any state for that matter). I'm just wondering where a good place to setup shop so to speak would be. I'd rather be in a community where my work is contributing to support and provide opportunity for the middle and lower class, and thus suggesting Malibu is something I'd rather avoid.
Any ideas?
