Apparently this qanon nut job was so far down the rabbit hole he had to kill his kids.
Was concerned that his wife passed on her "serpent DNA" to the kids and they would grow up to be monsters.
Yes, the lizard people taking over the world.
Kids were a 2 year old son and 10 month old daughter

"According to the complaint, Coleman said that he knew what he did was wrong but that "it was the only course of action that would save the world."
"Serpent DNA" is a likely to be a reference to the "lizard people" conspiracy theory, which falsely purports that reptilian aliens secretly run the world
and have taken over important positions in government, banking and Hollywood.

"Lizard people" is a much older conspiracy theory than qanon. Probably at least as old as V (the sci-fi series).

Pretty sure its older than that so I don't know what your point is. QAnon is just reframing all the old conspiracy theories to the modern situation, its not like this isn't known to anyone who knows basically any conspiracy theory that existed prior to QAnon and also any basic claims of QAnon. Its all the same shit. Shadow group of megapowerful elites controlling everything and working to micromanage everyones' lives via a bunch of nonsensical theories. And if you follow it, it all ends up back at anti-Semitism.

From the article:

"A criminal complaint alleges that he told the FBI that he killed his children because he believed they “were going to grow into monsters” and that conspiracy theories led him to believe that his wife had passed down her “serpent DNA” to the children."

It's plainly obvious the only "monster genes" are coming from his side of pool, not his wife’s.

This POS is also setting himself up for an insanity defense.

Fuck.

Just going to go hug mine.

The pain those little girls had to go through being stabbed 17 times by a spear gun. Horrible. I keep picturing their eyes as the person they look to for protection is stabbing them to death. QAnon is a right-wing conspiracy theory that believes a deep state elite abuses and murders children. So…dude turns around & abuses and murders his children .

Qanon and the like are a real-life horror story transplanting atrocities of the Dark Ages into a time period I'd hoped humankind should be more enlightened and reaching for the stars.

I'm pretty sure that he won't likely win on that. If I recall, the insanity defense is strictly limited to being mentally aware/capable at the time to know what you were doing was wrong/illegal, not to being colloquially labeled insane because you believe in conspiracy theories.

This guy is the same as any election fraud QAnoner that goes down the road to violence in the name of preserving the power of Trump. They are all fundamentally the same.

British conspiracy theorist David Icke is the most popular promoter of the "lizard people" conspiracy theory. Wasn't aware that qanoners had absorbed this particular brand of batshittery. Then again, it doesn't surprise me. Social media is causing this nonsense to spread like COVID and these people will believe absolutely anything.

Curious if this guy turns out to be psychotic. It's one thing to believe that there are people out in the world who are lizards. I mean, it's totally "insane" in the ordinary non-clinical way we use that word. But not necessarily a form of psychosis. But believing that somehow your wife and your own kids are lizards, and that you therefore must kill them? I kind of hope he really is psychotic because it's kind of scarier if he isn't.

I'm convinced that most major conspiracy theories are influenced by popular culture. Another example is the X-Files story line involving microchips being implanted by way of a smallpox vaccine. The conspiracy theory was either unknown or obscure prior to that series. Such a great idea that was, creating primetime story lines which cause certain people to become paranoid about vaccines.

I guess in the case of "V" there wasn't much they could do about it. Create a series about reptilian aliens appearing as human as pure escapist entertainment. Who knew that people would promote conspiracy theories suggesting there are actual lizard people and that people would actually believe it.

It's sad and pathetic that certain people can't seem to separate fiction from reality.

You forgot to mention that most major conspiracy theories are also influenced by grifters looking for gullible marks to drain wallets of money. Modern CT's like Qanon in particular. This incident is a stark reminder of why the Post Truth era Trump and his Republican cohorts have worked so hard to bring about is so dangerous:

Yes, and many of said grifters are likely borrowing from Hollywood scripts.

Just read the criminal complaint.

"M. Coleman explained that he was enlightened by qanon and illuminati conspiracy theories and was receiving visions and signs revealing that his wife, AC, possessed serpent DNA and had passed it on to his children."

Visions? He's either setting up an insanity defense or he's actually insane. I lean towards the latter because if he's just setting up an insanity defense, then he's concealing a different motive. What other motive would he have had for killing his own children? He barely even tried to get away with it.

I think the man was experiencing the onset of something like paranoid schizophrenia when he came across certain conspiracy theories online which then helped shape his delusions.

Possibly ... but with Qanon and any Republicans that have pushed the CT, I'm going with "Owning the libs".

Hopefully the FBI will be asking the suspect where he got his information - and analyzing his browsing data for future related cases.

Those things are not mutually exclusive. If the vaccine/microchip CT is rooted in television, one need only make the right people the perpetrators to add the political dimension. Same with lizard people.

Qanons central belief is a Satanic cabal is molesting children. These ideas have roots in plenty of fictional stories, including the Bible, the best known fictional story of all. Why are these evil people being described as "serpents?" The purveyors of these ideas aren't generally creative enough to come up with them on their own.

Can we agree that qAnon is inherently dangerous and society needs to do something about it?
No we can't.
This country has a horrible track record of agreeing on whats dangerous.

Senator Joe McCarthy ruined thousands of lives and nobody ever did anything about him. Since then we've had presidents drag us into baseless wars and threaten treason & sedition. No one does anything substantial.
We've had documented election fraud, no one does anything. Our nations biggest problem is too many people believing horse shit and killing and dying to defend their beliefs. And I dont see a good solution.

I get what your saying, But I'm still going with that whoever drummed up the Qanon CT were not sitting around watch episodes of the X files and suddenly a light bulb went on. I think the main idea was to "own the libs" and a hatred for the other political party and their fellow countrymen to whom they refer to as "the libs". They may have added on with these other CT's already in circulation, but that's not the main reason for Qanons creation IMO. Also....The statements have made mention that this guy didn't even know of the serpent people CT until he started going down the rabbit hole of Qanon, so there's that.
