California could become the first state to mandate all dogs and cats be sterillized.

Pure breeds = health problems.
Mixed breeds = less health problems.

Explain further. Why is this?

he is right.

with pure breeds many have been inbreed so much tghat they have many health problems.

I'm sure most people in California are quite nice...how do they end up with such a higher percentage of idiot politicians?

Pure breeds have more health problems, such as hip dysplasia, due to inbreeding or breed specific health issues. Mixed breeds are less prone to these issues because you are spreading the problems across different litters/breeds.

This is progressivism people, bringing progress to society. It would greatly reduce over crowded shelters, and save the state $$$.

good luck in enforcing that. my dog is my property not the states.

Yes, but the dog needs to be licensed. They can simply make it that you can?t license your dog without proof of sterilizations (just like vaccinations)

Your car is your property too but if you don?t get a smog check you can?t license your car. They won?t take it from you unless they catch you operating it unlicensed. (providing your state has some kind of safety/environment law)

You could just offer to eat all the strays...I'm sure that would empty the shelters and save the state money.

I blame redistricting. We have the polititians drawing the districts based on voter demographics. We have some of the most fscked up districts you've ever seen. Also, the unions have way too much power here. We need to overhaul the way government works here if you ask me.

That has to be the most retarded law I have ever heard of.

Pure breeds = health problems.
Mixed breeds = less health problems.

What is the goal of this law? To control stray animals?

Dumb people :| :| :| :|

There's a pretty severe animal overpopulation problem. Allowing purebreds to remain un-fixed is a nod to breeders, who aren't contributing to the problem in the first place. Honestly it makes perfect sense to me and seems like a decent idea to deal with a sad and growing problem.

Perfect example of problem-reaction-solution right there. Amazing. Like a dog chasing its tail.

That's not progressivism, that's just mindless stupidity.

Hobbyist breeders will also have to obtain commercial licenses or be shut down.

License = governments excuse to control your life while taking more of your money.

In other words, the little guy gets the shaft while big guy gets protection from the state through the heightened barrier to market entry. Next step, dog breeding megacorps. Wow... you are progressive.

All mixed breeds will have to be sterilized in California, if a law is signed by the governor, and pure breeds that aren't for service use, or aren't license for breeding will also have to be sterilized. With in time all mixed breeds could be wiped out in California.
Yes, because all laws have 100% effectiveness - animals will escape notice and breed.
Laws are also not permanent. The law may simply be repealed once the problem has been effectively curtailed.

Your parents should [sue the state education system which taught you that random legislation is the same thing as being progressive].

America's been working this way since its inception. When did you lose the blinders?

I am curious what animal activists think about this: It's a great idea to curb the stray population and would save thousands of animal's lives a year I am sure, but it does limit the variety of animals. Any hard core animal lovers here?

I was being sarcastic about the OP's claims of progressivism. And are you saying this is a good thing?
