For some reason I can not figure out what I'm doing wrong.

The question is to find
[f(x + h) - f(x)] / h

and

[f(w) - f(x)] / [w-x]

given, f(x) = x^2 + 6x

Any help is appreciated! 🙂

What answer are you getting? Unless you're misunderstanding how to evaluate f(x+h), I'd imagine you're probably forgetting to distribute the negative to both terms of f(x).

[(x+h)^2 + 6(x+h)] - (x^2 + 6x) , , and divide everything by h.

Should be pretty straight forward. 🙂

oh wow, I was trying to plug in f(x)= x^2 + 6x into the top equations. Now I feel stupid. Thanks guys.

Where's the calculus in this?

Chapter 0.2 in my book. Didn't really think about it being the "Before Calculus" Chapter when I asked the question.
