You would do best with a formula that incorporates bodyfat or lean mass. A fat 5'9" 230 person would have a much lower BMR than a 5'9" 230 bodybuilder.
This looks like some decent information.
The typical formulas for BMR (and bodyfat for that matter) work as long as you're fairly "average," being very fat or very lean and/or muscular screws them up. After all, all these formulas make use of datapoints they got from a sample of mostly "average" people, they then fit an equation to that data.
