Calculating my Basal Metabolic Rate?

I'm male, 23, 5'9, 230lbs.

I figure it's somewhere around 2200 calories, but from looking at a bunch of different websites, my BMR is anywhere from 1900 to 2700.

Where are all these sites getting their formula's from? What is generally regarded as the most accurate?

Depends on..

*genetics
*physical activity
*number of meals eaten a day
*many other factors..like temperature and such

Well... duh? :p

He's asking how to calculate it.

Found some notes from a nutrition class I took on a cd for you. I doubt it will be very useful but what the hell :p

B. Basal Metabolic Rate
1. Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) = the rate of expenditure of energy by
an organism in a basal metabolic state; usually expressed as number
of kilocalories given off per hour per square meter of body area.
2. BMR is proportional to the mass of the body, i.e. the number of cells
present.
3. Surface area is more important than body weight; surface area
determines the rate of heat loss that the BMR must compensate for.
Consider 2 people with the same weight; the taller (thin) person will
have a higher body surface are and a higher BMR.
III. Basal metabolism continued?
4. Determination of body surface area
a. Dubois equation:
A = W^0.425 x H^0.725 x C
A = Body surface area in cm2
W = Body weight in Kg
H = Height in cm
C = 71.84 ( a constant)
b. Use a Nomograph for determination of body surface area

edit - those numbers in the equation are powers
again - can't get a readable version of the nomograph because it is so old, sorry :\

I see that's what you use on your site (the link you sent me).

I'm curious to know though that using the formula on your page, my BMR at 230 lbs is 2503 and at 170 lbs it's 2454.

Would I really only need 50 fewer calories to sustain my body at 60 lbs less weight? Other sites/forumulas give me values of like 1800-2000 at 170.

In this case it will strongly depend on your lean mass because you're fairly heavy for your height. Also thyroid function is important, but presumably yours is normal.

You would do best with a formula that incorporates bodyfat or lean mass. A fat 5'9" 230 person would have a much lower BMR than a 5'9" 230 bodybuilder. This looks like some decent information.

The typical formulas for BMR (and bodyfat for that matter) work as long as you're fairly "average," being very fat or very lean and/or muscular screws them up. After all, all these formulas make use of datapoints they got from a sample of mostly "average" people, they then fit an equation to that data.

I'd just like to point out that I am heavy for my height, I may not be as large as you think. I guess I've got one of those body building frames, where I'm really broad at the shoulders and taper in at the sides and have really big strong legs.

While I have put on weight in areas like my face, neck, butt, etc, most of my fat has built up right around my stomach.

So while 230 may seem like a lot for someone who is 5'9, when you look at my frame it's really not all that much. People always think I'm around 200 lbs and are completely floored when I say I'm 230.
