JoeBadD:
But he also missed half the game in that season due to various injuries. Same thing repeat itself last year. He's just not as durable as he used to be (what do you expect when you're 40years old?)

<< One wife, and children only with her.

I couldn't care less about the rest of his accomplishments, but that right there commands my respect.
>>

Kinda sad when having children only with your wife is an accomplishment that deserves respect.

My hat's off to Ripken, he is a truly great player with a work ethic that everyone has to respect. It's a shame that the Orioles are as bad as they are, as it would have been nice for him to go out on a high note.
By the way, if you happen to catch a Cal Ripken home run ball, DON"T throw it back like that idiot fan in seattle did, it has a lot of financial and nostalgic value to more people than anyone can imagine.

rufruf44, no argument that he isn't the player he once was.

and I'm glad he's getting out now instead of overstaying his welcome.

but, he has been a heck of a ballplayer! (regardless of what morons like classy think)

I said he was great ballplayer. Truly one of the game's greats. But when you start getting all slushy with the family and autograph stuff, I just pointed out that he isn't all peaches and cream. Okay there, chief?

Good ballplayer in his prime.. Hope he doesn't try and make a futile comback like Jordan wants to do.

He'll be missed.... Cal is one of a dying breed, an athlete that I wouldn't mind having my kids look up to. A superstar that's not in the paper because he's in trouble with the law, killed someone, does drugs, has 12 kids out of wedlock. No, Cal is a baseball hero that can be respected for what he did on the field without having to think "yeah, but off the field he's scum and a criminal".

With regard to Cal charging for autographs, I saw him sign autographs for kids at Camden Yards when I was there. He sure didn't charge then.... if he did at some other point, I'm not aware of it.

Nobody's perfect, and I'm sure Cal (like all of us) has done some stupid things... but he's not an overpaid criminal thug like some other athlete 'superstars'.

JoeBad needs to deal with some anger issues and figure out that a dose of reality to a fanboy thread is to be expected.

<< One of the classiest sports figures in history. >>

No arguments from here on that!
Actually kind of interesting that the consecutive game streak he broke belonged to Lou Gehrig, another class act.

He is asking for no more than I was asking for which is for classy to provide a scintilla of evidence to back up his assertion that Cal Ripken is not what he has been portrayed to be. I don't think the man is perfect but when someone posts

<< I live in the Philly area and my family is from Baltimore. Cal Ripken ain't as nice as many think he is. I am not saying he is a bad guy, but he was a serious pre madonna type player. And that stuff that sign autgraphs for free is out right lie. He might now and maybe in the last couple of years but I know for a fact he didn't sign for free. >>

and

<< But he's not as genuine as many make him out to be. But after he's gone from the game I am sure the little not nice tidbits will be known. >>

I think it reasonable to expect something to back up these statements. There were plenty of links to articles written about the man that portray him as the exact opposite of what classy has stated.
