Caffeine tolerance, bad?

So I got some hydroxy-cut pills a few weeks ago, in part hoping the magical pill would turn me into Bruce Lee or something (not really), and in part to keep me energized throughout the day.

The instructions say to start with one pill a morning, then two, then three.

Now, each pill contains about 300mg of caffeine in them, or about 3 cups of cofee--a sizable amount for anyone.

The first day I took them then I felt extremely energetic, and was able to get through the day fully awake--a rare occurence.

A few days later I began to feel tired during the day, so I switched to two, which helped--and then I was up to 3, or 900mg of caffeine a day. The first day then I felt a jolt like I've never felt before, but now, about two hours after the fact I'm feeling yawning all over again.

*blah blah* I should sleep more at night, but how dangerous are really high amounts of caffeine to an average sized person like me? I feel like I did a few weeks ago with no caffeine in my body, in spite of having about 9 cups of coffee worth in me. My resting heart rate at the moment is 75-80, which is about my average..

I doubt its "dangerous", but its probably gonna kill your energy levels, especially if you ever plan on trying to NOT take in that much caffeine daily.

It's not necessarily harmful in high doses, but you can become dependent on it and experience mild withdrawal symtoms when you don't have any.

900MG is A LOT of caffeine. I don't even want to know what kind of headaches you'll have if you skip a day.

Yikes! After 6 cups of coffee my teeth are chattering and I'm sweating like a pig. I'm scared to know what a couple more would do to me.

taking that many energy pills is going to hurt you more than help you in the long run. Higher energy levels will come from working out.

Make sure you keep an eye on your blood pressure. Caffeine will cause that to go way up as well.

FWIW, I was under the impression that Hydroxycut had 100mg of caffeine per pill or 300mg per 3 pill dose.

900mg seems really high.

Just to point out, 900mg IS a fair amount of caffeine, but that's nowhere near dangerous unless you have some kind of underlying condition. The LMD50 for caffeine is about 10g, or more accurately 150mg/kg. LMD50 btw is the Lethal Mean Dosage required to kill 50% of a given population. That's about 33 of those pills. I would point out that you'll probably experience negative side effects long before you reach that point.

Anecdote: I had a buddy who approached the lethal dose once. He lost motor control and fell, to hear him tell it, he knew he was falling, and tried to shout or move but couldn't, and then blacked out. Of course that could've been a combination of caffeine intoxication and sleep deprivation...

I remember seeing studies that showed that eventually when you use caffeine so regularly, your brain activity can only reach normal activity when you have the high amount of caffeine that you have become used to, so when you don't use the caffeine you end up with lower than normal brain activity. It then becomes much like getting off any drug, it takes time to get back to being without it.

You get all sorts of side effects from caffeine, you start pumping adrenaline into your body, blood to the stomach and intestines is constricted, your liver produces more sugar into your bloodstream, so you get a big boost of energy. It's less like your body is working harder and more like eating a big meal with lots of sugars and carbs and then sitting on it for a few hours.

Caffeine causes both increased brain activity and constriction of the vessels in the brain, so in essence reduced blood flow to the brain. Try holding your breath for a while at rest, then run a block and try holding your breath the same amount of time. Doesn't seem safe, does it? Just be careful with high amounts of caffeine, eventually any amount you use regularly you will become dependent.

I didn't realize that caffeine had an MSDS, but I just looked it up. All of that HazMat first responder stuff can be useful from time to time.
