Cadillac engine question

RU482

Lifer
Any gearheads here know....What was the Cadillac engine to avoid? I vaguely remember something about a cast iron block and aluminum heads, or maybe the other way around...anyway, it was a real piece of crap engine. I'm trying to remember if it was in the 80's or the 90's

Anyone have any idea what I'm talking about here?

The engine with displacement on demand which didn't work right?

not the 4-6-8, I think that was in the early 80's/late 70's (wasn't it?)

I'm thinking it was used in the sedan deville.

Anyway, I'm thinking about picking up an early 90's Sedan Deville for a work car. They can be had pretty cheap and seem to run forever, lots of power and room.
Anyone have any experieince with this car??

Edmunds has good forums and reviews for older cars..

My friend had a 91 sedan Deville. It was a beautiful car in pristine condition, however it was expensive to maintain. It was always in the shop for something. Eventually they couldn't afford to keep it so they sold it. But the car itself was in excellent condition. Very nice car to drive and be driven in. That car had excellent paint too (well my friend owuld often wash&wax it..even in the winter!).

In order ;

4-6-8<----- If converted to run on 8 all the time, not so bad as the others.

350 Diesel<------Gasoline engine converted to Diesel = total crap.

HT4100<------ So many problems that I could not even start thinking about making a list of what goes wrong with these.

How does one convert a gasoline engine to diesel? Seems like a disaster in the making.

Different heads/pistons and a swap to diesel injectors. That's about all the changes GM made to the car, and you're completely right that it was a recipe for disaster.

When I was in high school I had a '72 Coupe Deville...all black...with a 472 c.i. plant.
That car was an absolute bad@ss.
Until one night on the turnpike Alistar7 and I were headed to Pittsburgh for a huge party at A.I.P. when a suicidal deer leapt in front of 4000 lbs of Detroit iron rolling at 80mph.
I never drove that car again.

Stupid deer. :|

Yup, Redly, you're thinking of the 4100. I'm sure GM thought it was a good design at the time 🙂

Oops I was doing eighty in my Deville through a heavy dear area today. Took a cruise on Highway 1 across devil's slide and to Half Moon Bay. Calamari at Barbara's fish trap in Prinston. What an engine, Northstar 32v. All it needs are breaks on the steering wheel.

Anyone here remember the Cadillac Allante??? ROFL!!! The worst piece of crap GM ever tried to pull on American consumers...EVAR!!! It wasn't that bad a car, mind you, nor was it ass ugly like the Aztek (in fact it was quite a beaut for its time.) But at some point in time everyone realized that it was a hopped up Buick underneath Pininfarina's boxiest skin ever...that Cadillac was trying to sell for $60,000!!!!!! No manual tranny option!

Who was the competition back in 1990 (same price?) Lets see...Mercedes 560SL, Porsche 944 S2 (cheaper back then), Acura NSX, GM's own Corvette ZR1, Jaguar XJS, and ahh...yes...the lowly BMW 840Ci!!
