My ex-friend had a POS Cimarron in the late 90s and was so embarrassed that he told people he had a Catera... keep in mind he was a pathological liar to begin with, but it was funny nonetheless.

In all seriousness, the car you're talking about was the G20, not the G35. At least that car, unlike the Cimarron, was based on a very sound Nissan platform, and visually looked nothing like a Sentra. I have always thought the G20 was a handsome little car. They are definitely not P's of S, and in fact they are great little cars, notwithstanding the cold-starting problem you describe.

G20 was based on the primera, not the sentra

Funboy was the one who said it was based on the Sentra. I recall it had the same engine as the Sentra SE-R, but beyond that I was taking his word for it.

the cimarron was bad.

but, the worst conceveid car, was probably the fiero.

today, i would buy a fiero GT no doubt, but back then, it was the last model, and they had finally gotten everything perfect, only the mechanical and engine fires presented many problems.

the Fiero turned the ways of manufacturing cars upside, space-age frame, the way the body and frame were mounted together, monocoque cabin, five star crash test ratings, etc.

great car, poor sales.

back in the days the cimarron was produced???

they ALL did, and japanese cars were the worst offenders of it, unless you mention the chevette.

Maybe he means "based on" as in the Sentra came first and also had tires and an engine.

Yep, in the 80s cars were awful rust buckets. I was living in the Midwest at the time, and you'd regularly see cars that were just a few years old with bad rust.

Does anyone know what has changed, in that respect? Is there a metallurgical difference between the steel used then and now, or is it a matter of better internal coating, or what? Modern cars don't seem to rust at all.

<--- Owns an Infiniti G20
The G20 is based on the Japanese/European Market Nissan Primera, not the Sentra. They may look similar but the Primera was larger. Also, the G20 used the top of the line 4 cyl motor from the Sentra/SX200 the SR20DE, for its day it was rather powerful, and yet quite the fuel miser.
My G20 is 15 years old now and is just starting to need work done to it.
Nissan FTW.

LOL....my first car was a Cimmaron. What could go wrong did go wrong on that thing. At least I could claim I was going to pick my date up in my Caddy.

Funny story;

The sunroof leaked really bad on the passenger side if it was a heavy rain if you made a left turn. Well, back in my senior year of high school I'd been wanting to date this chick named Laura and would have gladly given my left nut to do so. She was a blonde haired blue eyed goddess (a shame she turned into a strung out coke head/theif years later, but thats another story).

Anyway, for some ungodly reason she actually asked me out and said she was interested in me. My self esteem being as low as it was at the time I thought she was playing a joke, but when she showed up at my room (I had a sliding glass door in my room, which fvcking rocked) it was on.

I'm getting off track....so, we decided to go out. It started to rain REALLY hard, but I didn't even think of the sunroof as there were other priorities on my mind if you know what I mean. So I turn left and what seemed like at least a gallon worth of water just poured all over her.

She looked pitiful, and I tried really hard not to laugh, but it wasn't possible to maintain a straight face. I cried I laughed so hard, which, as you can imagine, did not go over well.

She made me take her home despite my pleas that she would "dry out" :). I was sure I'd never hear from her again, but for whatever reason she gave me a secod chance, with the stipulation that we drive only in dry weather!

That car had so many memeories for me though. But it was horrible repair wise. The electrical system was crap, which meant my digital dash liked to go out every so often.

It finally gave out in traffic at a 4 way stop where she overheated and blew a head gasket, stranding my then girlfriend and her VERY talkative friend on the side of the road.

They towed it to the local dealership where I took $850 for it in trade towards a new S10 pickup.

I kinda miss that old peice of crap.

Uhh...the Fiero sold a TON of units the first year.

They are no harder to work on than any other FWD car of that era and have no odd mechanical problems. The engine fire issue was only a slight risk and only effected the first year cars.

Do your homework first.

It has been several years and several doctor prescribed drugs later. Your right it was the G20. I was just mentioning that it still is a car made by nissan that really wasnt changed much other then a few more option just like at the time the Cav was. All fairness by todays standards yes the Cimeron is a crappy car and so was the cav at that time too but back in the 80s they were not that bad of a car. The engines were very solid and if the bodys havent rusted apart too bad and can find one will still run good today. Its really no different then as it is today. The escalade is still a rebadged gm suv, and alot of cars are done this way just that with the cav and the cimarron they really didnt do much between the two other then very suddle trim diff and maybe leather seats.

But then and now really hasnt changed much other then they will try to do a little different pannels , head lights, badges so they dont look to close as the same as the two in the OP do but underneith is the same ole car you can buy cheaper if you just drop the richy rich name tag.

Maybe if they featured the Cimarron in some 80's rap videos...
