I do think Chevy is one of the weakest aspects of Caddyshack.

I do think Chevy is one of the weakest aspects of Caddyshack.

That could very well be, however, I don't remember the movie because...IT SUCKED, oh yeah and so does Dangerfield.

D

If it's any consolation, I thought CaddyShack 2 was OK.

Both Caddyshack and Office Space are hysterical movies. Watch Caddyshack for Chevy's subtlety. Most people don't catch teh funny with him and think he's "the weakest aspect of the movie, or whatever Tallgeese wrote"

Agreed. Both are classics and will be in my DVD collection forever. ;)

Caddyshack has so may subtle jokes, you have to watch it a few times. So may great scenes. Compared to today's moview, the production is pretty cheesy, but the laughs are timeless.

One of my favorite scenes is when they play this regal-sounding trumpet fanfare introducing the prizes for the caddy tourney, and the camera is showing the first place trophy. As the music continues, the camera pulls back to show the second and third place prizes: a bag of golf tees and a pair of socks.

Rodney is priceless. "This is my friend, my Wang. No offense!" His golf bag with the radio, beer tap, TV and club ejector.

Chevy: "So what are you doing in this wep of the nake, nake of the wep...what brings you here?"

"What does that sign say?" "No bare feet." "Not that sign, THAT sign." "No fighting." "What does that mean?" "No fighting."

"As many of you may know, the caddy scholarship is available. Carl Lipbalm died this summer of a severe anxiety attack." "I heard he choked on his vomit." "Shut up."

And Carl telling his story of jumping ship in Hong Kong and making his way up to Tibet. He has D'Annunzio's brother at bay with a pitchfork barely touching his neck. And when he says "there won't be any payment" the pitchfork swings subtlely left and right like it's shaking its head.

My sig contains my favorite line.

I actually liked all those movies, 'cept Caddyshack, of course. ;) Airplane is another great early 80's comedy.

Gosh, what can o'worms have I opened? It's amazing to see some of you people's reactions. Caddyshack may have been the greatest comedy of its time, and you may have seen it a billion times and loved it as a youngster when it first came out. You can probably quote it word for word without missing a beat. It's even number 71 on the AFI list of the best 100 comedies. But for myself, who has just watched it for the first time, I simply ask, what's the big deal? Sorry if I walked on your lawn for asking such a question, but that was just my personal reaction. Maybe I missed it and need to watch it again...

Who knows, maybe in twenty years, people who watch Austin Powers for the first time may look at it and ask "what's the big deal?"

I just barely watched Caddyshack for the first time ever. Why is this movie so popular? It's mostly unfunny, the characters are stupid, and...well... I guess it was just an opportunity to cash in on the popularity of the Saturday Night Live actors (Chevy Chase, Bill Murray)

When the funniest character in your movie is Rodney Dangerfield playing a basic variation of himself, well, you've got problems.
When the so-called attractive woman in your movie is the nerdy chick from Tron, you've got more problems.
When the funniest gag in your movie is a poop joke, well, you've got major problems.

I'm not one that likes to spell out his reasoning, but suffice to say, it was a major disappointment. :(

Ask someone with a sense of humor to watch it with you to explain the jokes. If you think the funniest thing in Caddyshack is a "poop joke" I suspect that the problem is entirely on your end. If a tree falls in the forest and nobody is around to hear it does it make a sound? How about "If a funny joke is told to somebody who doesn't understand it will it get a laugh"? In your case, no.

"What's that candy wrapper doing there? Don't you see it? WELL PICK IT UP!!!"

Seriously, if you were a teenager during the late 70's or early 80's, you'll probably relate to the movie better and think it is hilarious. This could also be because if you saw it when it first came out, it was probably one of the most memorable humor movies of that time. Watching it again brings back lots of memories for me, which enhance the experience and make the movie even more enjoyable.

Same goes for Star Wars, the first one. If you were around to see it when it first came out, you were lucky enough to be part of a community that lived and breathed it, and shared a common experience. It was such a special movie at the time that nothing came close IMHO.

I didn't see it in a theater with a bunch of friend and I can watch Caddyshack over and over and over again and laugh at the same jokes over and over and over again. :D

It's a great movie.

I'll bet you liked Happy Gilmore though.

Same concept, same story line.

Both had great music in their movies though. Sandler always has good '80s music in his movies.

How about:

"I've got to crawl in this guy's head. I must act like a gopher, think like a gopher, and look like one".
"The best part about it is you can play 18 holes on it, then get stoned as hell off of it." It's a mix of Kentucky Blue Grass and Sensimilla".
"It's good stuff, I got it from Negroes".
"I've sent boys younger than you to the electric chair"
"People don't say that about you as far as you know"
I've got a pool and a pond. The pond's good for you".

C'mon, that movie was hilarious. Maybe the generation gap is rearing it's ugly head, but I remember taking my girlfriend to that movie when it came out, what was it, like 1979 or 1980?

I'm pretty damn sure its not a generation gap, Blazing Saddles came out in 1974 and I think its god damn hilarious. Sorry, Caddyshack just didn't hit the spot. I laughed, well not so much laughed rather than smiled ONCE, during Caddyshack. Shiiiiiit

Caddy Shack will always have a special place in my heart, just because after going through 3 months of Marine Corps boot camp in 1980, the DI's marched us down two days before graduation, and once we were in said "Enjoy", then left us alone for the movie and we laughed our asses off.

It had just come out and on top of going through that just made it better.
