CAD program for simple cutting board design?

I want to make a DIY cutting board with a unique pattern and wish to try out different ideas before starting. I need a program *free hopefully* that will allow me to draw a series of rectangles (black and white) where I can "cut various sections" and rotate/manipulate individual pieces 180 degrees to create a custom pattern. The reason I need software is it is difficult to visualize what certain designs will look like.

For instance, the following video should give an idea of why I need software. I do not want to copy a design but would like to try out some different things before cutting any wood.

Look into Sketchup. The UI is a little weird at first but look for a tutorial or two on youtube and you should be good to go. The program is free to use as long as you are not using it for commercial uses.
