ok, so were building a new "barn" and I need to wire it for phone, cable, and network, I've got the network MOSTLY sorted out but have a few questions. im gonna make a list under each catagory and hope some of you can help with some / all of it.

  • Phone:
  • How in the hell do I wire it, we have two lines, how do I splice from the house out to the new barn from the phone interface, and once I've done that, how in the barn do I get it to connect to the wall outlets.
  • Where can I buy, RJ-11 crips and telephone cable (I've heard I can use cat5 if so read the next question)
  • Whats the wire sequence?
where do I get enterence / exit protection?
  • Cable:
  • What type of cable do I buy and where do I buy it
  • I need to split a signal 12 ways (rewiring the house aswell) I assume I need to use an amplifier, where can I get that equipment.
  • where do I get the crimps / crimpers, and none of that cheap crimp sh!t!
  • Wall outlets and stuff, where do I get that?
  • Network:
  • Where is the best place to buy Keystone jacks and wallplates?

That about covers it, thanks for the help in advance.

Hey narzy! Believe it or not, you can acquire a lot of these materials off eBay. That's where I get my connectors and crimpers. I've seen faceplates there too. Otherwise, Home Depot or a similar store should have most of what you need. Might need a stop at Radio Shack too.

hmm, most of the equipment (except maybe line amplifiers) can be found at your local hardware store.

Telephones should be wired in parallel, although there may be a limit to the number of phones you can put on a line (although this may be for older phones whose ringers were powered off the line).

You shouldn't need any rj11 crimps if you're putting wall plates everywhere. Just buy bulk phone wire (make sure you get the higher grade stuff for the walls) and wire to each plate...

It's called RE. Ringer Equivalence. You add up the RE for all phones on a line and it can't go over a certain number. Don't recall the #, though.

Well there ya go ;) Looking at the bottom of my phone (cheapo vtech) shows an RE of 0.4...so yeah, whatever that number is able to go up to. I've had anywhere from 1-4 phones hooked up and there wasn't a problem...a friend has 5 or 6 sometimes and that's not a problem either, granted these are newer phones.
