Cablevision users: anyone try Optimum Boost?

Optimum Online Boost is available in my area and I wonder if anyone has tried it. Is the 30 Mbs downstream theoretical or are people actually seeing the speed boost?

  1. Update

Boost was switched on last night and I'm enjoying the advertised speed increase - about 25mb/s sustained during peak hours! 🙂

Thanks for the advice, amdhunter

I have it and have kept it.

price isn't really huge and I heard that the non-boost connection had limits placed on torrents.

Interesting, I'm hoping upgrading will allow my wife an I to watch hulu on one tv and netflix HD streaming on the other smoother than before

I had it for about 4 months then got rid of it - I can't tell a difference. So now I'm back to 20/5 instead of 30/5.

Is this the same comcast technology that road runner bought and calls Turbo? If so, I have the road runner version, and I love it. Smaller downloads are done in the blink of an eye.

No, the RoadRunner starts quick and slowly drops after time. Boost can hold close to 4MB/s sustained for hours or all night. I once had ~60GB or so que'd up and it didn't bat an eye for the entire download.

Is that a constant rate? Can you hold that for several hours? Shit, here in Timbuktota the Internet speeds are decent and not bad, but the fastest (non-commercial and non-EDU) stuff you can get is about a 25Mbps burst and I heard that isn't even a reliable rate. (provided by Mid-Continent) I have CableOne and we get the 8Mbps package and hold a 1.1MB/sec on downloads.

Either way you look at it, fast is fast and most websites won't even upload quick enough for people to take advantage of the speeds.

Taken a few seconds ago. Yes, it's constant. 🙂

I know you're not uploading, but I'm curious if Cablevision is still capping for "excessive use". People who do torrents would fall under this category if they kept their share going for more than an hour... according to their "rules" when I got nailed a few years back. Are they still doing the capping whether it's boost or not?

There hasn't been a recorded capping for almost 2 years now.

Haha they finally learned the error of their ways - they never even admitted to capping. Too bad so many left them because of it and now they're begging for people not to go to FIOS. I get 2 calls a week.. and the other day a guy showed up at my door and I had to explain to him why I won't switch back. Inferiority sucks... it showed in his face.

Excuse me while I enjoy their misery (real competition) because they couldn't even get their capping rules right (I tried to work with them and their rules and still got capped X 4).

How is FIOS anyway? I will be moving soon, and I am wondering if moving into a FIOS area would be worth it.

For the same price, I can't name a single thing wrong with FIOS, honestly. 20/5 package here for $55/mo. if you don't do the triple freedom. TV service is better, channels are so much quicker to change, the guide as well. I'm comparing with my parents' cablevision service right now... if they hadn't offered them so much to stay, I would've gotten them off it too.

*bumping thread*

Well with my noted hate for Cablevision in the above post... I got a "please come back" call from them yesterday. My first thought was g'damn leave me alone already but the guy was cool and actually asked if I had 2 minutes. He didn't make it sound like a sales call. Best salesguy ever. They offered $85/mo. for 2 HD boxes (incl. 1 free DVR box) and 30/5 free Optimum Boost for 2 years (no contract/cancel anytime) and of course the phone. I actually said yes because FIOS taxes do suck (also noted above)... we pay nearly $20 in taxes and Cablevision says they are only required to charge taxes on tv which is like $5. FIOS has been great, nothing wrong with their service but paying $85/mo. vs. $115/mo. is a big difference and I get 10Mbps faster downloads, and no more contract. At the end of 2 years is Optimum Rewards which is a $15 credit every month as I understand it.

This change is going to occur in about 30 days so if there's any reason Cablevision / OOL has been sucking, please say so. Are there any frequent downtimes or slow times? Looks like they no longer cap speeds either. One reservation I have is surfing channels was always slow on Cablevision... is this still the case? I guess we'll deal.

Another option is I can see what FIOS retention can now do for me. Yes, Cablevision is paying my FIOS cancellation fee too.
