 for all you Cablevision customers.

Aye, they are bad, but bitching results in nothing. For people do something about it if you feel so passionate.

You all sound like Arafat, applauding the revolution and continuing to contribute to that which further hurts your cause instead of actually doing something about it.

You didn't know about this? This is very very old news. Call them and get it uncapped, thats all. Stop using bittorrent in bursts. Use it for like an hour, and than stop for 15 minutes or so. From what I gather they cap you based on time, not the speed, although I'm not sure how true that is. If you upload at 50kb/s 24/7 you will most likely get capped. Some people can upload at full speed forever and will not get capped, but if your node is busy, bet your ass you will. Or you can find another method of downloading where you can just leech. My favorite method is newsgroups.

www.netlimiter.com <---good if you want to cap speed.

Hahaha you told them your son used Kazaa and they didn't sh1t a solid-gold brick?

it was the time right before when RIAA was suing everyone who were using kazaa download music. I just gave them some lame excuses.

the other time, I told them I was playing webcam with a buddy and forgot to turn it off.

hehe thats about as bad as the excuse I gave my isp when they shut it off for downloading a tv ep.

CSR: it looks like USA Cable contacted us about you serving BattleStar Galactica last week.

Me: Hmmm.... let me check my "network log"...(Paused for effect) ahh yes looks like on Wednessday at 7:45pm someone broke my wifi encryption, he must of downloaded that ep so I would get in trouble instead of him.....I apreciate you calling me I'll increase my secruity on my network so this doesn't happen again

CSR: Your Welcome sir i'll turn you connection back on immediatly

Me: thankyou

End Call

Couldn't stop laughing that they bought it

I don't use BT for download music or movies but I don't see an issue with TV since its really no different than using my tivo

That's good advice. I only got capped a few days ago when i started to leave it on 24/7 (I used to turn it off before i go to work in the morning). I'll try to limit my upload to 50kb/s and <8 hrs per day and see what happens.

actually limit your upload to 30-40kb/sec.. not more than that.. i got capped once... u get 3 warnings.. after the 3rd warning ( i.e. the 3rd time u get capped ) they refer u to some other department which would decide whether ur service should be terminated or not,etc..

it seems to me, though, they look at the time period of uploading, rather than speed because he only asked me to limit the time and didn't say a thing about limiting speed. But I'll limit uploading to 50KB/s .

by the way, you're using cablevision too? they told you about the 3-warning policy? what's your upload speed before they capped you.

Google and download a program called Netlimiter and limit your upload speed that way. Very useful program. It might have to be one of my favorites. :)

My BT client BitComet can already limit upload. I suppose that works?

i've heard of people getting capped 5 times and not being terminated. in the end, they want your $$.

also, limiting your upload speed does not matter for some OOL users. i know people who limit their BT to 10k upload and STILL got capped cause of the length of time they were uploading.

what really pissed me off was that there is NO notification whatsoever when you get capped. i had to figure it out myself with dslreports.com, speedtests, etc.

As binoculaz was alluding to, it is not your speed, but the length of time you're uploading consecutively. The word is, no longer than 1-2 hours at a time if you want to be on the safe side. I've followed this rule after being capped and I've been ok for months. You have to be really diligent about it especially if you're using BT. Watch the time. I typically get a tv show downloaded in 2 sessions this way - not terrible.

I've left it going for 4-5 hours by accident once and another time for 3+ hours but came away fine, no throttling. I believe what happens is if they notice a drop in speeds (or people complain about speeds in your neighborhood) they can pull logs and weed out the troublemakers. Point is, stay under the radar as best you can.

dslreports --> OOL forums has a bunch of this discussed.

UPDATE: just called cablevision, the guy was very nice, he said "you uploaded for long period of time so we throttled the upload". I said I forgot to turn off my pc when I went to bed and that won't happen again. he said "that's fine, you can still do whatever you do, just do it little by little, not for long period of time, we're only doing so to protect the network." Sure I understand I said. he said I'll remove your cap. your speed should be fine in 2 minutes.

Just tested it. back to 10000/1000 bps! Guess I'll have to limit BT to <8 hrs per day now.

17KBps > 100kbps.
1000bps is horrible, I'd call and complain.

he meant 100KBps (it's actually 125KBps)... OOL's max is 10Mbps/1Mbps up/down and it's pretty damn close most of the time.
