what is the maximum length of a single channel IDE cable? I am working on a carputer and need a good deal of length too get it across, only other choice is IDE to USB and get a long usb cable.

The maximum length per the ATA/IDE standards is 18". However, it's possible to get 24" cables and I've 'heard' of people using 36" cables with no problems, but the potential for data loss is possible with cables >18" from noise, etc.

Yeah, USB and Firewire are going to be needed for anything like that. SCSI would work, but would probably be more trouble than USB.
