Cables for Consoles

I have the following Consoles and I was wondering what is the maximum screen resolution they are capable of and what cables are needed to get that (I assume most or all require cables purchased in addition to the console). TV has 1080P resolution.

GameCube (probably unnecessary since the Wii will play the GC games)

Wii

PS2

PS3 (possible purchase as a Blu Ray player)

GC probably 480i, connector = ???

Wii I believe 480p over component cable

PS2 depends on game, mostly 480i/p over component

PS3 1080P over HDMI, 720P over Component (1080p if your display can take 1080p on component, which most can't)

www.monoprice.com if you are looking for cheap cables

Muchas gracias.

I assume those component cables for the Wii and PS2 and the HDMI for PS3 are all special cables that are made for the consoles output? I have a set of component cables originally purchase to plug a DVD player into a tube TV which accepted those, but those have RCA style jacks at both ends.

Yeah you will have to get special cables for those except for HDMI. PS2 also has an optical audio output if you want to use it.

And don't bother with getting special cables for the GameCube. The component cables for the GameCube are rare and expensive, and they only work with some GameCubes (Nintendo removed the output port for them at some point).

Right, and since we can play the GC games in the Wii, we don't even hook the GC up anymore. Only there as a back up.

You can get the Wii component cable for cheap at monoprice. Same for HDMI cable for PS3. I went overboard w/ the HDMI cable and got the 24 gauge one. It's damn thick and makes it hard to bend. The 28 gauge version will be good enough really.

I use my 'cube with a component cable so I can play GBA games at 480p on my HDTV.

Yes, that's pretty much the only sane reason someone could want to bother with using the 'cube with a component cable if you have a Wii. :)

Started looking at cables now that I have my PS3 on order. I can't find any HDMI cables for the PS3 tho. I did find the PS parts section and only component or Svideo that I could find.

Edit:

By non-special, I can order any decent HDMI cable and it will work with the PS3 to the TV or any other HDMI device?

Edit 2:

Wow, there are tons of HDMI cables. Anyone have a suggestion or recommendation for a decent quality HDMI cable modestly priced?

He already gave you monoprice.com. All the cables there are inexpensive. Any HDMI cable will work.

Just pick out the length you need and whether or not you want ferrite cores and boom there you go.

It was a little bewildering the huge selection. I'd guess the heavy gauge is most important for long runs with HDTV's wall mounted etc. I'm just using a furnature TV stand atm so a 4 or 5 footer should serve. My TV came with a ferrite core which looks like it should just snap onto an HDMI cable. I assume the ferrite cores are to reduce any noice in the cable?

28 gauge is plenty thick and still great quality. Got a couple of HDMI and DVI-D cables and the 28 gauge are hard enough to bend. As long as the signal gets there as the 1 or 0 it's supposed to be, there really is no difference between the output of 24 vs 28 gauge cables anyway.

You shouldn't need any ferrite cores. They're really only useful at all for analog connections anyway. A 6ft cable should serve you nicely. Nice pick of colors too at Monoprice!

Someone recommended an HDMI cable 28 gauge to use with the PS3 from monoprice. It happens to come with Ferrite cores - does it matter if I just leave them on. They may be build in.

Get the most expensive Monster Cables that you can find. Otherwise your television will look like absolute crap.

Yeah, I found that out when I got the 24 gauge. It's kinda hard to bend on tight corners, wish I got the 28 gauge instead.

Leave them on, they're on for a reason.

The 360 will actually play games at 1080p over component too as long as your display accepts it.

Also just wanted to add another vote for the monoprice HDMMI cables. I use them with my PS3, HDDVR, and AVR and they work great.

Some Gamecubes can do up to 480p (depends on the game) if you have a GC with a digital out on the back plus have the 1st party component cables, which cost more that the gamecube itself nowadays.

As for the PS3, it can do 1080p out on component (do any tv's support 1080p over component?) on games, but it will only do 480p for dvd and blu-ray due to copy protection.

I ordered component for the Wii so we can toss in all of our GC games and play the in real glory! We only have Wii Sports and Mario Galazy atm.

I didn't get component cables for the PS3. Aren't HDMI the highest level resolution support anyway?
