They hooked up our cable today, and in my room, I get static instead of audio. The jack in the living room has working sound. What is the deal? How is this even possible? I thought everything was transmitted together.

On a normal analog cable line both audio & video signals are modulated together. They are seperated in the IF stages within the TV...
Any snowyness in the picture?
Check the on-screen configuration on the 2nd TV, make sure the cable settings are correct, you can choose between AIR, STD, HRC, IRC. These are all different signal types. If this option is set incorrectly weird things can happen.
Most likely it should be set to STD although some cable providers use the other signal types. You can check your working set for correct settings.
You could also have a problem within the TV with audio trouble. Have you run the set on a cable signal recently?
Autoprogram the set too, just to be thorough
EDIT: n/m you are using a TV tuner card... ....disregard all i just said... but still check your settings
