Cable Select Vs. Master/Slave

Any thoughts on whether to use cable select or master/slave settings for IDE hard drives? Seems like all of the new drives I've seen lately are coming from the factory jumpered for cable select. They used to default to master.
 
I don't see the difference that it would make, unless your purposely make the settings conflict. I've always thought it was good practice to manually configure Master/Slave rather than relying on the cable, which avoids potential mistakes.
