I hope you all can help me with setting up my cable router. I have three machines I want to connect:

1. Main computer running WIN 2000
2. Computer running WIN XP
3. Computer running WIN 98

I followed the directions that came with the router (D-Link 704) and the 1st and 2nd computers work perfectly. I did nothing to them and the internet worked as soon as I turned them on. My problem is with the 3rd computer.

It is a fresh install of WIN 98 and whatever I do, it wont connect to the internet (Comcast@Home). I have the settings exactly like the other machines. I have checked and unchecked everything in the network properties of this machine, but cant get it to work. The light lights up on the router so it is getting a connection and the ethernet card is a brand new linksys that is working right. Is there something special I need to do? Is it the OS that is the problem..should I put WIN 2000 on it? Do I need to set up this computer to "specify IP address" instead of obtain it automaticaly?

Any help would be really appreciated. I cant get this to work for the life of me. I checked all positions of the router with the 1st computer and it worked in each one so I know it is not the router.

Thanks! And yes, I am new to networking-

Bryan

Win98 can connect, and share (it is actually the easiest to set of the three OS?).

Do you have a functional Network; i.e. the Win98 computer can talk to other computers?

Did you check the System properties to make sure that the NIC is installed correctly, and there is no IRQ conflict?

You can try to unplug the cable from a working computer, and plug it to the Win98 Computer, to make sure that it is not a CAT5 cable problem.

The content of the following links may help:

Setting Up, Windows 98 / 98-SE.

Networking and sharing between computers.

Welcome to Anandtech...

You have a D-Link Cable/DSL modem router hub?? Connect all PC's to it (like you already have)
In windows 98 you have to set the Network Neighborhood Options.
Go to Control Panel- Network-
make sure you have listed
NETBEUI
TCP/IP
File and printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks (make sure Both Options are selected)
(Your Network Card Adapter)
Microsoft Family Log on
Client for Microsoft Networks

In the TCP/IP protocol Click PROPERTIES and choose... (OBTAIN IP Address Automatically)
This is how I have set up on my XP,2000,98SE. I have a lynksis 4 port Router though

Well it looks like all should be working.. THOUGH!!!! XP and 98 dont work so well, neither DOES 2000 with 98. I sometimes get problems that they dont "talk" to each other. I dont know what it is. But you cant even go on a regular website??(ie Yahoo.com) I personally think it is a OS problem, when all my systems were 98SE i had no troubles.. but when I upgraded to 2000 and XP, troubles began. The system sometimes works and sometimes does not, but that's all i can think of now... I'll check my machines if they are different too...

(Make sure your WORKGROUP is all the SAME... (ie.. MSHOME)

Thank you for the replies. KGB- I will make sure my settings are like that when I get home. I did try to "ping" the router and it timed out. I am not getting any IRQ conflicts with the NIC so I guess it must be a setting. I am going to read those links you provided.

One more thing- you say that 98/2000/XP dont like talking to eachother. But are they still talking to eachother with a router? I could understand that if it was a hub and I was trying to network them together and share files, but I am just sharing internet access from a cable modem. Why would one OS impede on another when they arnt sharing anything from one to another directly?

usually going to:

Start->run->command ...and then at the DOS prompt the first thing I would try is pinging your router. If it can't reach it then there is usually a connection or wiring problem. Also, your NIC may not be setup correctly. Check device manager like mentioned by JackMDS. if you can ping it but cannot connect to webpages, try to release and renew the IP address from DHCP. you can do this fastest by:

Start->Run->winipcfg ...you can then release, then renew. If all is good it should connect you. Try to ping something like www.anandtech.com. If that works but webpages don't work in IE you can try to run through the connection wizard again. This forces it to "detect proxy a server". Usually this does the trick for me. In my experience, Xp, 2000, and NT are all much better at networking than 98. DHCP is near flawless for me in Xp/2000. cheers!
