Monopoly!!

MSNBC story
NEW YORK - The price gap between cable broadband service and phone carriers' digital subscriber lines widened to an all-time high in August, according to a survey by SG Cowen.

How many of you have a choice of which Cable provider to use?

There is only one in my area Cablevision which provides Optonline, no competion price stays higher.

i have 2 choices for TV , Dish or Direct TV

i have one choice for POTS telephone service and DSL isn't offered. we live under a cell tower so cell service is good

i have 3 choices for internet access, dial up via POTS, satellite of various flavors (all at very high $) or Wireless ISP

i live in BFE , that isn't all that bad for being in the middle of nowhere

we switched from satellite to WISP and it is very good and good enough to drop Sprint-Local/POTS and use just cell phones and SunRocket VoIP

if you don't like cables price then switch, if you live in a city there must be options

Down in LV, cable rules the roost. The meager DSL options there are sound okay, until you realize that they only offer like 512kbps, versus the 4mbps standard that cable gives. Yeah, it's $15/mo vs. $40/mo, but this article doesn't seem to account for that. :(

Maybe if you would pay off politicians like they do and your local officials might actually care...

<---$45 a month if I want to get a single channel (ESPN)

I only have 1 cable provider, and the Telco setup is done in a way that I can only get a good DSL thru Verizon. All other companys can only get me the 144k or whatever connection.

I don't care how much faster Cable is. $30/month for my 1.5/256k DSL will always be better than the $50+ it would cost for cable (I don't get my TV from them, so no multi-product discount). Plus the whole $19.95 for 3 months! is just ghey imho.

One choice for cable, one choice for DSL, and Sprint charges way too much for the speed of DSL they offer, cable is much more cost effective for the speed. If you just look at the cost though, dsl is cheaper.

50$ for me.

Actually the nassau county is trying to make a deal to bring Verizon as a Cable TV provider option, but its all a bunch of politics and long way to go, that would give Cablevision competition.

well, did they consider the fact that you need to subscribe to telephone services in order to get DSL?

DSL and cable here. I have either Wide Open West or Roadrunner, and Wide Open West is MUCH cheaper.

Here is the story about having choices. Hopefully it becomes true.

Verizon Cable Vs Cablevision
"I want Hempstead residents to be among the first on Long Island to have a choice when it comes to cable service providers," Murray said. "Competition should serve to enhance the quality of service, increase programming choices and reduce prices to consumers."

No sh1t. Dollar for Dollar, cable is a better deal anyway.
Of course, in Taiwan they are looking to get gigabit internet in homes soon for the equivalent of $200 a month. Which is an even better deal for your money.

I hate Comcast as well. I wish ANYTHING else serviced my area. Merely on principle I hate them for not letting me see the Nationals games on cable. Bah.

cable is cheaper per megabit. yes, you can spend less money on a DSL line, but it will be a hell of a lot slower. non-promo prices will have you spending about $45/month for 6 Mbps on cable and the same money for "up to" 3 Mbps on SBC DSL. actual DSL speeds are nearly always lower. let's see, double the speed, same price...

remind me again how cable prices are "higher?"

don't get me wrong, i hate all telecom companies with a passion, comcast included. but cable is a better deal.
