Cable or DSL--Which is better?

my friend daniel(JimboTheConquerer)think that dsl is better than cable and i told him that cable is better than dsl, but adsl is better than cable. Is what i think true or is what he thinks true?

DSL is better but you have to pay more for it than cable. DSL does not share their bandwidth with your neighbors so no matter how many people sign up, you will always get the same speed oppose to cable. Cable will slow down if more people sign up.

Depends on where you live. GENERALLY, cable has much higher download speeds, while DSL will have better pings (better for gaming). But, it's not always the case. For example, I'm on cable and get pings just as good as the DSL provider in my area, but cable here tops at ~400K/s while DSL can only get ~125K/s. Ask people who live close to you...

...which is exactly the kind of misinformation you hear most of the time. DSL is not always better, and yes it's shared just like cable is. DSL is shared at the Central Office instead of the node in your neighborhood, which is why companies claim it's not. In reality, if they have too many subscribers, it'll slow down just like cable in some areas.

The real question is who the provider of either service is. You can get 2k/sec downloads with either type if the company doesn't know what they're doing.

depends, ask around ppl who live in your area. dsl should be very consistently close to their advertised speed but cable varies, so just ask people near your area who have cable. it ususally is good but better safe than sorry

Forgot something... 🙂

ADSL and SDSL are both subcategories of DSL. The "A" means asynchronous (Upload speed is different(=slower) than download speed), while the "S" stands for synchronous (both UL and DL are the same. Most ISP offer ADSL. SDSL usually costs much more.

If you have both cable and DSL where you live, call them up and ask what kind of bandwidth they provide or guarantee. Ask people around you if they're satisfied with their speed and service. Price is also something to look at...

just look at all the dsl company, it's virtually all going out of business.. and soon it'll get shut off w/o warning.. but it also depends on where you live.

DSL seems to be the option if you want consistent speed like for gaming or running servers for gaming etc. Cable is faster for the most part. But, this would depend on what DSL service you buy. I have seen 256k DSL, but it is generally pretty expensive. I have had cable for 2 yrs and I have been pleased with it for the most part. Service is shakey sometimes and the tech staff doesn't always know what is going on, but I usally figure it out on my own.

For general downloading, try this. I have been using this accelerator for a few months and man does it move fast. I generally get about 500-600k downloads and have occasionally hit the 1mb barrier. This would of course depend on where the file(s) is coming from. Good Luck! 😀

like has been said above, it all depends on where you live and what company you use

for me bellsouth dsl is best and fastest choice

For opinions on many ISP's, try DSL Reports. A very good site that allows users to post their reactions to certain ISP's. They also have some nifty tools. Good Luck! 😀

I have ADSL and get 1277 down and 216 up. It's always consistent. It's only $39.95 a month. I love it and would commit harikari if someone took it away. 🙂

All I can say is SprintION DSL is awesome. 8Mbit/1Mbit, Cable cannot beat that. Plus if you want to host a server, Cable just doesn't cut it, you get horrid ping spikes when a lot of users are on in your area. DSL is not shared until you get to the DSLAM and I would rather the bottle neck be on the hardware side (which can be upgraded) rather than the layed physical line.

Cable is great i get 5000/1000. Which is better than most dsl lines. Of course as more people start signing up it'll start to slow down.

Each has plus and minus factors. Most of the nation does not have access to either one yet . . . cable is being much more aggressive in expanding their coverage and reach. DSL is highly telcom dependent . . . and realistically it will NEVER be available until the telcoms increase the number of switches. They apparently will not do that because ofthe risk of anti-monopoly lawsuits . . . so to get DSL I would have to move. Cable will be here this fall.

Eventually wireless broadband access has the potential to reach out and touch all the areas that DSL and cable do not reach.

i have telocity SDSL and i get an average of 800/800 for 49.00 a month its ok for what i do 🙂 ill be building another system to just host games and i run an ftp server so im happy

what are some of the best DSL speed tweeks out there

Why so much misinformation?

DSL isn't a "private" connection as it is marketed. The "dedicated line" idea is only from your home/business to the DSLAM. After that, you are sharing bandwidth with everyone else. Think about it. Do you think they are running a direct line from your house to a router for you alone?

As for "which is better", the answer is either/neither/or. You've got to ask around to people using the various services in your market. In some areas, DSL is superior in performance, but in other areas, Cable offers superior performance for less money. In some areas, neither is a good choice (because of high cost and/or poor network performance on either.) No technology is "best" 100% of the time for every particular situation.

Overall, DSL offers better ping times but less overall performance and at a significantly higher cost than Cable.
