Aren't all cable modems equal (w.capped service)? i ask b/c my boss is telling me that i should return a linskys modem I bought and buy something else. Well, i found a D-link modem for the same price with one less rebate. Any thoughts on my boss's opinion? Also, should i base my decision on which modem looks better on my desk?

No, they're not equal. Cheap means cheap quality wherever you go. I've used linksys, terayon, RCA and motorala modems, and the motorola blew them all away.

Performance of different brands of DOCSIS 2.0 complient modems may vary slightly but not significantly. Some modems may have better extra features such as a browser-based diagnostic screen or external standby switch...

A lot depends on what firmware version your isp forces onto your modem. For example, I use a motorola SB5100. It's great for download but for upload it is slower than the Linksys and Toshiba models. My isp could fix this with a firmware update but they have not done so yet.

Motorola modems are high quality like randal said. I have used them, RCA and 3com and I prefer them.
