Yippe I finally got a cable modem service from @home from Cox. After testing it out, Im getting 35K download and 900b upload. The internet speed test all show around 200k bandwith. Am I up tor par or is this on the slowside. Anyway its a hella of alot better than dialup for extra 10$ a month and 225$ to purchase the modem. Any input greatly welcomed. Thanks

I have road runner, and tampa bay road runner bites it most of the time. They are one of the first areas to have cable modem, yet they are one of the worst in their coverage area

I can upload at around 35k/sec

That sounds kind of low, but it really depends on your area. I go anywhere from 50KBps to 100KBps using Charter@Home. My uploads seem capped at about 18KBps.

Are my numbers up to par Rickn or do they need improving. Im a Sob when it comes to service and if I should be doing better than I will bug Cox until its done.

Raincity if u are on cox which service are u paying for? I am on cox in arkansas and I only pay for the cheap service 25.00 and I get 14 kbps dl and 4 upload. If you pay 39.95 you shold be getting anywhere from ? ( depending on availibility ) to 100's . Cox caps both as far as I know. At least in arkansas. Which is stupid considering the town I live in has 22,000 ppl and they are worried about band width give me a break. You can also download neotrace and check you hops for ping rates. I have found some bad hops and contacted cox and they ususally fix them that day.

Like rickn said, speedguide is what helped me. My D/L is 170KB to 190KB, and U/L is averaging 41KB. That is Bytes not bits. I'm on RR here in Jacksonville, Fl. I don't think it's possible to compare one area against another, way to many variables. 🙂

i don't have one... but i do install them all day🙂

on extreme's our system ranges from 50KB to 1000+KB(only from microshaft and or very big FTP's) on average it's 100-250KB thing is... we have a T-3(45Mbps/8MBps) for roughly ~2000 ppl... so it's damn fast right now🙂

then again... we add ~50 ppl a day so.... draw your own conclusions..

I went to speed guide over the weekend and downloaded the win98 mtu patch and just installed it and ran netstat live while downloading windates and it went up to 70k down and 1.5k up. The mtu patch really helped but now I have to resart the machine a couple of times before i can get on. I waited a few minutes after rebooting for the modem to reconect to the network but it refuses to do it at all. Is this common and is there a fix for it. Where is the fastest download sever to put it to the test now. Thanks

I'm a COX subscriber and my typical download speeds range from 80K to 110K. My upload speeds are capped at around 15K or so.

I am a Comcast @Home subscriber. My TYPICAL speeds are about 250KB/s (bytes not bits). On the high end I can get upwards of 500KB/s. The only time I see less than 100KB/s is when I am connecting to a slow server. All in all I am extremely happy with cable. I used to have 256K DSL ... nice improvement.

As far as uploads, Comcast has a cap somewhere in the area of 25KB/s, though I am usually able to push it to 50-80KB/s.

The other day I checked my cable speed at the MSN site (link is on my other computer, don't know it by heart), and my cable hit 3000 kbps with 800 Kbps file transfer (downstream). I just about pissed myself when I saw that. Typically, I was seeing about 1500 kbps on a good day and sometimes I hit the nadir around 150 kbps. I think MediaOne upgraded their capacity around here lately.

I just got Cox@home also in the VA area.

Go to AGN3d downloads and try to download some demos. I can get 150kbs a sec through my server and my client at the same time while surfing from both machines.

It may depend on your area but I believe the main factor is were you are downloading from.

comcast@home in sacramento d/l are average 300-400 KB/s and have peaked at about 600+..average uploads are 80KB/s. But i am a beta tester and there are only a few hundred users in sacramento right now.

Ok I think I got this restart problem fixed now. I am still looking for the superfast server to put this mtu patch to the test. I am in peak hours of usage right now. Another strange thing happend since the install. Whenever I open this page http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=27&threadid=191566 and try to click on the links below that a user posted, they open up outlook 2000 email reply with the link in the too box. Whats up with that. Is this a file assocation thing with outlook. Anybody know of a fix. thanks all

I think thats good for cable man.

Try again later and also tomorow.

Watch out for reg tweeks because sometimes they help but they can also hurt.

Xray, "Your the man" You got the answers. Thanks. I guess 70K is nothing to sneeze at considering I was only 5.5K yesterday. The installer said that this node was was heavily congested since alot of users are on it and they just added my neighborhood to it but where planning on subdivide it up soon for better service. If anybody else has got anymore tips, I want to hear them.
