Cable modem

Both will function the same but with the internal, you'll never be able to add a router if you want to have more than one machine, hardware firewall, etc.

I don't think he was referring to internal, or external Cable Modem. I think he is referring to ethernet card, or integrated ethernet. If my interpretation is correct, than the from my experience, there is no performance loss by using the onboard ehternet. It is on the PCI bus, so you have the same max 133 MB/s as if it were a card.
 
ahhh, since your subject was 'cable modem', I assumed you were talking about if there was a difference between using an external ethernet connected one or an internal cable modem. 🙂

Unless it's a server w/very high traffic, the onboard is perfect.
 
IIRC onboard lan actually outperforms NICs nowadays on newer mobos, particularly on the nForce 2.
