I saw a Motorola Surfboard SB3100 for $220. Don't know if that's a good deal but it's a DOCSIS modem though.

Wow... I guess that the $5 a month I pay to rent my modem really isn't that bad... I just had one go bad after only a year.

Now, I have a motorola surfboard sb3100... What does a docsis modem mean?

damn. I paid $15 on mine. really need to buy it.

btw.. this goes to the I WANNA thread... 🙂

DOCSIS = Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification

Developed by CableLabs and approved by the ITU in March 1998, DOCSIS defines interface standards for cable modems and supporting equipment

DOCSIS specifies downstream traffic tranfer rates between 27 and 36 Mbps over a radio frequency (RF) path in the 50 MHz to 750+ MHz range, and upstream traffic tranfer rates between 320 Kbps and 10 Mbps over a RF path between 5 and 42 MHz. But, because data over cable travels on a shared loop, individuals will see tranfer rates drop as more users gain access.

For More Information, check out CableLabs

DOCSIS is to cable modems, what V.90 is to 56K dialup... it's just an operating standard.
DOCSIS is only in the US... overseas they use a similar standard called Euro-DOCSIS

Cox RoadRunner (not a typo) just dropped rental fees to $10/month here in NoVA. Getting better by the ... year? 🙂

here in nashville, we rent ours for about 20$ a month. they just now started offering to let customers buy their own. they suggest the motorola that compusa sells for $260~
A friend of mine in N.J. said he picked up a 3com cablemodem for $299 with a $200 rebate. I'd love to have him mail it to me to see if it works here 🙁

I work at a local ISP and we offer our cable modems for only $8 a month. We use Nortel Networks modems and we have had some pretty good luck with them. Go with Sigecom, it is the way to go! 🙂

Got my Toshiba from Circuit City for $160 after rebates. Look for specials in the Sunday paper. They always seem to have them here.

paldo , do u kno where u saw the SB3100 for sale

also w3b, just a word of caution. My ISP charged $10/mo. to rent a DOCSIS compliant SB cable modem. When I was having it installed I remarked to the cable tech that I was thinking of purchasing one to save on the rental cost - he told me that my cable ISP generally "upgrades"/swaps out the modems on a 2 year cycle. Being a DOCSIS should allow you to use your modem in any compliant system but doesn't necessarily mean you'll have the most current features. (can only do so much with firmware upgrades)

!@#$%^& rookies - sorry for the dbl post

3com cable modems seem to be nice. But where can you buy them? I checked buy.com and many other retailers online but none seem to offer them and if they, it wasn't cheap
