Cable Modem

Hey gang. I just currenty upgraded to Time Warner 10mbps down / 1mbps up. I had their 6mbps connection and was able to use my Linksys BEFCMU10 modem without any problems. When I upgraded, they told me with the bundle, I had to use their Scientific Atlantic DPC2100 cable modem.

Now, I have all linksys products, which neatly stack on top of each other. I called today and had them switch to the Linksys cable modem(gave them my MAC address and what not). After switching, I went to www.speakeasy.net/speedtest and ran the test. To my surprise, the download speeds fluctuated ALOT, the upload was consistant at 1mb. Anywhere from 4.5mbps to 8.5mbps. When I had the Scientific Atlantic on it, I would do the speed test and the download speed would be consistant at 9-10mbps, with the upload still at 1mbps.

My question is, should I switch back to the Scientific Atlantic modem? Is there something new on the SA modem that the Linksys just doesnt have? What can I do about this? Please put your suggestion to good use. Thank you!

I can't really give you a "technical" answer except that there may be a problem with the Linksys modem. The simple answer for me is to use the Scientific Atlanta modem since it appears to work better on your connection.

The answer is probably that new DOCSIS standards have been rolled out in the past few years which your old modem doesn't support.
