Cable Modem Speeds Unlockable?

I've heard that there is the possibility that one can modify a chip whithin the modem to unlock bandwidth twice the current speed. Is there truth to this?

Probably not
My provider just doubled the speed and I didn't touch the interface.
Also, "cable modems" aren't modems at all.

Might try this if you telnet to it and at the prompt issue:
AT&L33T&SP33D&4FR33

Sure, but you'd need to do that EVERYTIME you rebooted your cable modem. Kinda a pain. Thats why I prefer to short the speed sensing circuit to ground (as posted above). Of course, you violate your warranty to do it, but you don't have to remember to do this if you power cycle the box....
