I have COX@home internet ( cable internet ) in southern california, I use the cable modem and computer in the bonus room. I want to move the entire system and cable modem into my bedroom. My bedroom has the same cable just like the whole house, but when I plug in the cable modem, it says there's a problem with "cable". What's wrong ? Is there a way I can make the cable in my bedroom work like the one in the bonus room ? To my knowledge we have the same cable tV channels throughout the whole house.

I have @Home and the cable line that goes into my modem is separate from the TV lines in the house. The whole house has only one line coming in from outside, but Comcast installed a splitter to divide the lines internally...your cable modem line might have a special filter, which is why you just can't plop the modem on any line. You might be able to do some rearranging at your splitter.

The spliter for the cable internet is a "T" connector that goes straight through (hard wire) where a regular spliter has tranasformer coils inside. there is no actual electrical connection. You have to find this spliter and move it to the cable going into the other room. They ran a seperate cable for my internet commng off this spliter, so I don't know what would happen if you tried to split it again in the room to run tv off it too. you might have to run a seperate line to that room, or only use the cable only on internet or tv at one time. :D

You can split the line that goes to your cable modem and connect it to your TV. I found the quality of the TV signal to be excellent (despite being split twice) and it didn't affect the modem's performance...the modem uses a different set of frequencies than the cable channels, so you can use both simultaneously.

As long as you dont want to watch TV in your bedroom you should be able to do it.

First find the splitter for your cable modem line.

Next find ALL the splitters between the main cable line and the line upstairs. You will need to replace all these splitters with ones like the one to your cable modem.

Take your cable modem splitter to Radio Shack and get enough to replace the ones to the bedroom.

Then you will need to run a line from where your cable modem splitter is now all the way into the bedroom.
