i got a cable modem and i want to put two computers into that cable modem. it has two ports in the back a lan and a usb port. can i just use the usb port while simultaneously using the lan port so that both computers has internet?

I dont know if that will work, but it would be much better if you got some kind of consumer firewall/router/switch.

Nope, that doesn't work. You can use ether the lan or usb but not at the same time. If you want to put two comptuers on the cable modem, then go pick up a router.

If you have a Toshiba cable modem, it even says in the manual that it will work, but unfortunately it doesn't. You simply need to attach a basic router w/ built-in switch behind the cable modem, and plug your computers into that.
