I think it is most likely that the issues are with your cable provider's plant in the area. They may have been taking the network down for trouble-shooting. I don't think heavy usage on the loop in your neighborhood would cause things to go "haywire." It might slow things down if a lot of people are streaming videos, but the stuff most people do regularly doesn't really use a lot of bandwidth. If you're having problems with connection reliability the best thing to do is be the squeaky wheel with your provider for a few weeks. They might have some bad bit of equipment out there and just need to put in the resources to find it.

On the connection to the router, do a Google search on "router default passwords." There are a couple of sites out there that maintain lists for the popular models. I used one to get into a neighbors router a few days ago, to help him resolve an issue and get encryption working.

UPDATE:
After returning from vacation, I could no longer get any connection to the internet. A cable technicican came out to the house last Saturday. Essentially, he started working from the street connection into the house. The splitter at the street junction was bad - replaced. The cable to the house wasn't working properly - changed. The splitter into the house was bad - changed. The splitter in the attic was bad - changed. My connection is now working fabulously.

I would say the moral of the story is as follows: when a technician re-installs an existing cable connection, make sure they confirm all of the components are working properly. I believe our installation technicians were excited about not having to do any additional work and just simply plugged in the cable modem.

Thanks for all the help!
